Hi, my name's AJ, I'm new to this forum although I've been reading for a while.

I'm looking to buy a new T6 combi. I've been on the VW website and speccd one up, came to just over 50k.

Price isn't too much of a issue as I'll be offsetting 50 percent of it against tax as a combi is a commercial vehicle and I'm self employed.

My choice is either 204 4 motion or the fwd petrol DSG. I only cover 8000 miles a year so consumption is irrelevant for me, although the sentiment towards diseal seems to be unpopular at the moment. Any petrol t6 van owners out there, views on this engine?

The extras is where I'm having conundrums. What have you guys gone for and why? Is there anything you think is not needed or a extra you had wished you added in hindsight?

I plan to use my t6 from moving house next year, to towing my boat or track car, to road trips, surf trips, camping, beach days, maybe even installing a rocknroller bed or having a pop up roof fitted next year. It's going to be my everyday vehicle but hoping it can do it all.

Any advice or general words of wisdom be great.

Cheers AJ.

Btw this will be my first transporter, pretty excited.

Check with hmrc that they class the kombi as a commercial. You can get the vat back as long as the payload is over 1 tonne - 4motion may fall foul of that in kombi guise. Hmrc will treat it as a car for benefit in kind although as self- employed not sure how this would affect you. Plod will treat it as a van for speed enforcement purposes.

Petrol will be less bother than a diesel- shame they don't offer petrol 4motion over here.

It sounds like you need to do more research into the tax implications first.

I had to ditch the 4 motion get myself within the vat rules.

Factory extras all add weight reducing the load capacity too so you'll have to be careful there also.

What on earth have you added to it to add up to over 50K???

I've been doing some more research on this and your right, the combi van is a grey area and it seems no one really knows whether it's a car or a van, even if it's classed as a van! Claiming vat back is different to offsetting it against tax, the 1000kg and above seems to be relevant to people claiming vat back but not for people who set it against their tax. Minefield!

I'm now thinking of going panel Van and then getting it converted to combi to cover my back incase I'm investigated.

The 204ps dsg 4motion starts at 40k, I speccd it out with pretty much everything, it came to 50k yes!

Although I'm sure Dominic at nationwide will get a better price than the VW website.

Anyone own a 204 petrol?

Wrong, it’s a VAN, no grey area at all,

Unladen weight for HMRC VAT purposes does not include driver. Unladen weight on VW spec sheets does include driver, so 75kg difference between the two (as i understand it)

The VAT definition of a van is clear, and a kombi satisfies this (with the correct weights etc). The company car definition for PAYE benefit in kind is unclear (depending on who you speak to) and the best guess is that it is a company car not van, so you get taxed on it as a car, rather than the beneficial rates of the van. How you / your company declares it is down to them - they fill in the paperwork as they see fit, but if it is wrong they can come after you for the difference.

For me, I have ordered a panel van, as am risk averse and don't want to chance it, and I will leave it as a van as that is all I need. A very nice van, but a van.

The difference between a van and a kombi - the only real difference (apart from the rear seats and windows) is that you can't spec the comfort dash in the van.

Just collected mine 2 days ago.

T32 Kombi highline 204 DSG. Full sportline kit added at dealer. 5 Leather seats. Bulkhead. Comfort dash. 2 sliding doors and no glass in tailgate. Also Few other bits added.

After a lot of Tax searching and info gathering from other owners in my field and accountants I'm pretty comfortable claiming it all against the business. 100% vat claimable as well.

We all know how it works HMRC are fine with it till they arnt. No explination needed.
Excellent organisation with great values. Could you imagine if they were in the private sector. How many times would they have gone bust!

HMRC - the only institution where you are guilty until you prove you're innocent. Applies only to individuals and small businesses only.

Ref the sportline extras, how much did it cost you to have the leather seats? What colour did you go for?

The comfort dash, did you have to ask for that separately? I couldn't see that on the options list.

Cheers

I did, guess what, it’s a van

A van for VAT purposes or a van for benefit in kind purposes?
Recent ruling by the ombudsman against coca cola company and it was decided that the kombi is a car for benefit in kind purposes.

If you have been told different, then make sure you have it in writing.

The leather wasnt part of the sportline upgrade. An added extra thru the dealer. Will check back thru the notes and find the company that did them as I had name and contact info.

Comfort dash was an option I asked for. It was also on the web configuratior.

Thanks Charlie. Nationwide has offered me a van with about 11 percent discount over list, is that good for a VW highline swb TSI DSG ?

Anyone had dealings with nationwide?
