Tow bar recommendations

Thanks for that , makes sense.

I had mine fitted last year and was told nothing could be done about the sensors on mine!
Still to this day not too happy about it
The fitter definitely did some recoding. I don't know the details but I did know it could be an issue, so I asked him about it. You know it's done when the screen shows the trailer picture when hitched up and reversing.

Edit: I've just found the quote as I couldn't remember the fitter's name and it had this in the email.

INCLUDES VOLKSWAGEN DEDICATED TOWING LOOM: designed specifically for the vehicle, complies with the warranty and activates any vehicle specific towing functions including trailer stability program (vehicle dependant) -

United Towbars - really nice guy and I went with his recommendations.

looking into getting a towbar fitted.

taking onboard @Deaky advice about looking at the :

Tow-Trust Towbar from "Towbar-UK" the TVW9VK kit & Wire kit.

and the wire kit, for vans with no prep wire loom, full function.

wire kit. VW126D2U

but . . . .

before all that i though i would ask the main dealer what they can do.

i asked for a supply & fit price for a detachable tow bar that integrated with the van that had all the PDC etc etc etc,

this is what they come back with.,

1648226874143.png1648226886817.png

and the quote from the email about the fitting labour . . .

"I've got the parts department print me the full breakdown of parts costs, plus a description so you can confirm this is the bar you wanted; the fitting time of 200 units translates to 2 hours, so that's £200 +VAT."

I emailed them back to clarify . . .

"Sorry, I should've been a little clearer, yes, that's £748 parts + £240 labour, £988 all in."

so . . . . . . .

looking back at the top,

the TowBars-UK kit, with all the extras is £452 delivered.

i think ill get the TowBars-uk kit and fit myself . . .

so the details from the dealer above may help other people with the WESTFALIA and install parts. . .

like foam fillers etc.

TBC . . . . .

Interesting post for me. I’m currently debating a Tow Trust tow bar. I was thinking about fitting it myself but too nervous about taking the rear bumper off, without breaking clips. Particularly the ones down the sides of the van. Look forward to you how to.

I had a Westfalia removeable fitted and the bumper was all wobbly.

I took the bumper off and refitted it with the foam inserts.

I didn’t break any clips, and actually fitted all the ones that the installer left out.

How did you get to the clips down the sides of the van. I had a look, can’t get a trim tool in there at all.

You don’t need a trim tool, to release the sides, just pull the bumper 90 degrees away from the van, there are no clips to break. Start from the wheel arch and work towards the back. Remove all the screws from inside the wheel arch and under the bumper first. Can’t remember but you might have to undo some of the heat shield too.

What @Deaky said. The edge of the bumper that meets the body goes into a groove in a plastic receiver that has little bumps which grip the bumper.

I didn’t drop or move any heat shields to get mine off.

We took some pics of the Tow Trust. Nearly took a finger off as it clicked in.

got anymore info. + Pics

did you have the prep in the van?

or did you need the full wire kit?

you mentioned the fitter do some coding . . thats fine.

when they run the wire loom . . . was in under the van or through the inside? - to get to the battery?, PDC module?, BCM?, etc etc ?

any other info that might help us ppls whos looking to DIY?

can you post some screen shots of the Nav screen when in reveres? . .

apparently the kit does FOG ligh Block and rear PDC Block if a trailer is connected?

We didn't have towbar prep, so needed a new loom for it. We got the VW one as the van was still under warranty.

I'm afraid I left the fitter get on with it, as it was in the early days of lockdown & distance was appreciated. He definitely coded it, was wired to the battery & somewhere else in the engine bay.

It showed a picture of a trailer on the screen when reversing. Not massively helpful.

I'm sorry I can't be more help. I've sold the van, so can't take any more pics.

this could be an interesting watch . . .

Hi, I have just had my first night away on a camp site in my fully converted T6. We really enjoyed it but could do with a little bit more space so am toying with the idea of a smallish covered/lockable trailer. Problem is, i have no tow-bar! Could anyone recommend a suitable tow-bar (preferably detachable) and approximate cost to supply and fit lease?

Thanks in advance,

Gary.
