TPMS warning light on dash

Hi everyone,I
I recently bought a sexy looking T6.1 which I intend to convert to a day van. Koni suspension had been fitted along with a new set of 19" alloys. Whilst I spotted tyre warning light was on the dash, I wasn't overly concerned as I thought it would simply be a case of check tyre pressures and reset.

When I got the van home and went into the info system, the TPMS was unavailable. After reading great info/advice on this forum, I identified the problem...the van had direct TPMS but no sensors fitted to the alloys.

I got 4x sensors pre-programmed for a T6.1 from UK parts direct and had them fitted. TPMS now working and showing the correct pressure for each tyre. Chose a tyre size that allows the new wheels to run within acceptable pressure (all 4x tyres over the set pressures). So no tyre pressure issues on the info centre. However the low pressure warning light is still illuminated on the dash and my MOT is about to expire. Tried every trick to try and get it to turn off but still on. Do I need someone with VCDS to simply clear the fault.

I've been told it could be a sensor fault, but all give a signal and the info centre displays all four tyre pressures correctly, so can't believe it's that.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received

Hello jenco66 and welcome to the forum.

Sorry to hear that you are having a small problem. I am sure that someone will be a long before too long to help answer your concerns.

How is the weather up in the Lake District. Tell me, is Jennings Brewery still operating? It was a very common sign 50 years ago and The Master Brewer from Jennings used to drink in the same pup that I used to spend time in Threlkeld.

Thats odd i have only seen the symbol light up when pressures were outside the preset range
You could always try a cheap scan tool like carista to scan and see if any faults come up ?

If you get stuck could you refit the original wheels and see if it clears

Thanks Kind of Blue !

Thankfully, the weather has calmed down after the storm on Friday. I grew up in Keswick and spent many days playing golf at Threlked Hall. We're you drinking in the Horse & Farrier ?

I've lived in Cockermouth area for the last 25 years and sadly, Jennings brewery closed its doors a couple of years ago.

It was the Horse and Farrier. I did not live their but was up practically every week end. Mountaineering climbing and all that sort of thing. For years I developed a little bit of an accent it was really strange. It is really sad that Jennings has close it was really good Bitter! All the locals said it was the best opening medicine on the market, Nobody became constipated it was well know, Nothing wrong with it. The Old Brewer, I can only remember calling him Bill and every one referred to him as Bill Brewer. I remember he retired a few times but he was asked back. I thought it a good sign that he he drank his own beer. Played pool with him. It was good crack in The Horse and farrier way back then. Everyone got on together the old and the young all taking the piss, joking about. Their never seemed to be any division between age groups it was nice to see. No idea what it is like now. I guess just like here many pubs have closed and those that are about probably are more like restaurants and lost there character.

You'll be fine MOT wise, if the light is on and not indicating a fault, then pass and advise.

Also, tpms is for M1 vehicles (cars), N1 vehicles (light commercials) tpms don't matter.

Thanks Kev, the light flashes for a minute or so before turning to a solid light, which I believe indicates a malfunction. So a TPMS fault on my T6.1 won't be an issue as far as MOT is concerned ?

If your a van, you'll be fine. If it's a combi, then it'll fail I'm afraid.

You'll need to get it code read and take things from there

It's a van fortunately so good to know. Thanks for the reassurance and for the advice on getting code read, really appreciate it. Booked in for MOT in a couple of days.

@Dundee_Kev, just reading through this thread, my 6.1 van has a tpms fault light on atm (long story) and is shortly due its first mot. My local VWVC dealer has told me if presented for an mot with this warning light on it would fail the mot...is this correct?

I suppose your sensors are different to my 2019 199 Caravelle Exec 4Motion. Mine are a wheel speed sensor type of device they notice changes in rotation speed between wheels. Some sensors I believe measure the actual pressure? If mine goes off a rare occurrence it is a tyre slightly down or a puncture. Wheel speed sensors that are faulty affect mine but not sure about yours. Perhaps give a little information about your wheels tyres and vehicle and others will be able to advise you. Are all you tyres the correct and of equal size? Have you set the sensors up correctly and so on. :)

Read the manual as given above, it's a pass. There are no means to fail the van. I'll assume it was the front desk that has said this?

Hey, if you have time on your hands and want to play games, then let them fail it and let the fun begin.....

Thanks for taking the time to reply @Dundee_Kev. Yes it was the front desk, they are in the process of dealing with a malfunction of the Tpms atm…and from reading the manual and the fact they know it has developed a fault is why they are saying it would be a fail, or have I misinterpreted that?
By taking it to a different garage who don’t know about the malfunction it would be a pass? 🤷‍♀️
I could just tell them it has a slow puncture, or the light came on as I was driving to them.

So the story is….Soon after taking delivery of the van from new with factory fitted tpms I took it to Bognor Motors for some upgrades and mods, the wheels being one of them. Off with the standard Devonports and on with 17” Black Rhino Arsenals ( supplied by me) and General Grabber 235/65 x 17 supplied and fitted by Bmvs when they also swapped over the tpms valves to the new wheels and set up the new pressures into the tpms appropriate for this set up. ( in hindsight I should of checked what pressures they should of been set at as they set them far too high…in fact higher then the recommended max pressure of the tyre ( front 57psi rear 48) which is apparently what they were told at the time.)
This only came to light recently on another thread on here, Swamper tyre pressures I think.
Last year a fault came up on the tpms with the nsf wheel not registering, so I made the journey down to Bognor and they duly fitted a new sensor valve and reset the tpms, still with the pressures far too high.
A few months ago the same tpms sensor threw a wobbly and again wouldn’t register. So I thought this time I’ll take it to my local dealer who can replace the faulty tpms sensor under warranty and code in the ‘new’ lower pressures….or so I was hoping!
Duly dropped van off and soon after the dealer called to say they had swapped the front wheels over and the fault still registered as nsf… so not the sensor grrrr….. they could not investigate any further without fitting the original wheel/ tyre combo and tpms valves as their system could not accommodate the size of tyre fitted to the aftermarket wheels now on the van..ffs!
So appointment made with a cost of £72 per set x 2 to be swapped over and checked. The clock is ticking as the van warranty runs out the end of June which is when the mot is due. I know the fault is now logged with Vw but it’s just getting to the bottom of it and getting the mot done which I’m getting a bit nervous about.
The word ‘ module’ has been mentioned a few times.
