Transporter/caravelle conversion

Just been pondering a possible conversion idea, has anyone done a conversion whereby the body is a kombi style (back end windows arnt installed) however with a caravelle seating arrangement, I like the idea of the more lounge style seating but without the wraparound windows .

It’s a great conversion, I’m always surprised more people don’t do it. You get a fully adjustable 7 seater, a completely stripped out van option, and a full width bed. Put a nanopod in it and have running water as well.

Yes we’ve done this conversion a lot. Suits lots of people and lifestyles.

I went form a Kombi 2+1 to a Kombi 1+1+1 with a third row bench. Originally I thought this would be flexible enough for me with the ability to remove singles seats as required.

However I didn't really consider how heavy those single seats are. Not exactly light to take in and out as you please and also need storing.

Now I have Caravelle rails fitted along with a Caravelle bench. Just need to get a floor down and decide on a multiflex board and then I'll be happy with my setup.

Even in its current form it's been much more useable for me as an everyday vehicle. The ability to slide the bench in either direction makes a huge difference.

Previously I would be unable to fit larger items in the van due to the seats. I've moved mattresses, furniture and even been able to slide the bench back a smidge to fit the Tesco shopping in easier behind the front seats.

If VW offered the rail system as an option I reckon it would be a winner for them.

I had my rails fitted by @BognorMotors

I use my Caravelle as a 5 seater, so basically a Kombi with windows and floor rails. This is a brilliant layout if you don't need all the seats. I have used it as a 4 seater, which is even better, but having taken the rear bench out once, it's stayed put since.

I don't imagine removing the bench is an easy job. Saw a video on YouTube where some guy has built a trolley for this. He has a "trick" using a board to remove the bench from the rails on his own and then slides it onto the trolley.

The style and finish of that headliner is immaculate. Love it, does it come a shade other than the dark grey/light grey combo please?

I think StudleyGlass' conversion is pretty much what you're describing.

As you mentioned, no rear windows but has the internal faux windows. It's very nicely done!

To hand this is all I’ve got. One of our old demos form kombi van to six seat Caravelle (glass all round) but you get the idea.

That looks wonderful. I also think that this is an answer to a question i have. I'm currently considering to buy a T6.1 multivan. I'd like to know whether it's possible to swap the bench and the 2 seats. I mean: slide the bench forward to the second row and then install the two single seats in the back. I understand that they will be inaccessible from the side doors, but I'd like to have this arrangement so that if i have to take some additional kids in the car, i can open the rear door to let them in that way. However, i have never seen a multivan with the bench in the second row and the two single seats behind the bench.

You can do it no problem. You need a friend to do it, the 3 seater bench is 90/100kg and a pain to remove and install Again.

Sure, just remember that you can only add and remove seats at the front, so you’d have to take the bench out first each time you added or removed a single seat.

Personally I think it's better with the bench in row 3. When you have all the seats occupied, you can swivel the row 2 seats to face the bench. Kids love that.
