Turbo Leak during exhaust side Smoke test

Hi all,

I’ve been getting a turbo whistle at idle, and a boost leak hiss under higher load. Also more of a base tone from engine under load. I smoke tested the exhaust side, and found that smoke was emitting at what looks like the cartridge where the actuator arm is on the turbo. I’m assuming it’s not supposed to leak like this…..

Also a bit of exhaust whiff on cold start in the engine bay. So this must be the offending issue. Sad news is I think it’s new turbo time.

All fun a games these vans

Great bit of diagnostic work!
At least you now know what the problem is.
Out of curiosity, where are you introducing the smoke?

I’m a bit upset as I guess new turbo time ‍

I was doing a back pressure test through the O2 sensor port and noticed there wasn’t any movement in pressure , barely moved when revving. So I decided to use the smoke machine on it whilst the adaptor was in there. I blocked off the exhaust and hey presto! I got the smoke machine as i wanted to check for a boost leak and found the intake runner flap bellowing out the side. That was replaced beginning of January. Felt a bit of improvement but still felt laggy…..other symptoms are more active regens. Passive wasn’t working now I know why as EGT’s will be low due to the hot side leak.
