VCDS tow bar question

The PF Jones kit works fine, when selecting reverse a picture of a trailer appears on the screen and the sensors are silenced.
I coded it myself using the guide on their website https://www.pfjones.co.uk/pfjoneswiringkits/29270522PF_VW_T5_Multivan_Transporter_T5_10-09.pdf section 38 shows the coding required.

i worked through this step by step following a guide 'somewhere', it either came with the bar kit or i found it online.....just searched and think it might have been this one as it looks very familiar! - Towbar probs

Hi - I assume this coding is universal regardless of the tow bar type and number of pins? I was told to use dash switch to just turn off the sensors when reversing but I don’t have that switch and have factory sensors.

That's a cop out being told to use the switch. Have you had dedicated electrics fitted or universal?

Not yet fitted. Using tow trust hardware but installers own loom. They are a tow bar and trailer only specialist and he vows he has never had an issue. Sounds like I just need to go into VCDS once done and code as above?

be careful on what kit they fit.

Universal tow bar kits control the lights but don't connect to the rest of the van systems. So rear PDC's won't turn off, picture of the trailer doesn't appear on the screen and the stability control won't work. You can not code these kits into the van software.

If you get a dedicated kit (any type) it has a CAN bus connection so the above points work but it's needs to be switched on with coding (VCDS etc). It you are getting the electrics for a bike carrier then universal kits are ok, but if you are towing I would strongly advise a dedicated kit. The cost fitted is about £100 more.

Not a specialist if they are telli g you to use a switch you don't have.

Ask what kit they are installing. I recommend westfalia or ECS, used both with no issues.

Just to clarify
There are vehicle specific kits that require coding and operate as per factory

Then there are universal kits often called 'bypass relays' amongst other things and they do not interface with the van at all, they just get signals/power supplies from the rear lights and do not operate any vehicle functions like rear parking sensor shutdown, towbar alarm monitoring, stability control, foglight control etc

And there is 1 bit change to the towbar module to set it to uk.

Hey @Loz , this is the rest of the world setting in the trailer module itself? I've just added the trailer module and sorted out park assist and all working perfectly. However when going into the trailer module it's asking for the security access code. When doing the park assist coding vcds gave me the SAC but it doesn't for module 69. Anyone got any ideas? I've tried 20103 as per MQB platform - Security Codes - work in progress but no joy.

Just go through and try some of the popular ones, but remember 3 wrong tries locks you out for a while so dont misinterpret a locked module with a wrong code

Cheers Pauly. That's the plan, might register on the Ross tech forum to to see if anyone over there can help. I did wonder if a lock out presented the same error as a wrong code. Better start writing this stuff down

I’ve got the factory removable towbar but only use it for a removable 2 bike rack so never connect a plug. Therefore the rear sensors still go nuts and the rear view camera shows a pic of my bike.
Is it possible to plug anything in to the towbar socket to make the van think I have a trailer connected and this stop the rear sensors from activating?

You could just get a cheap light board and hook it up? 20 quid from Halfords. I'd have thought you needed one of these anyway to ensure the rear license plate is visible when the bikes are loaded on

I probably should have one tbh as my number plate is obscured somewhat. That’s possibly the best option, sometimes it’s easier just to do things properly.
