VW All in plan .. again

I just checked my policy documents having renewed 2 weeks ago, which are the ones currently online, and that lists a much larger and different list to the one above

There is also this nugget I'd not noticed - if you are on a journey leaving the UK then the "abroad" terms and conditions apply to the UK portions of that trip too

Wow that’s quite the list…cover includes Azerbaijan & Russia? Does it say that is the list of all countries covered somewhere?

I provided the link to the online version as published by VW UK which is dated 1 May 2021 same as the copy sent to me 10 days ago when I renewed.

You could also follow the link from here:

It's a fairly badly formatted document in my opinion and defines the term as "Territory" yet refers to it as "European Territory" in the rest of the document.

It is however the only list of countries defined in it.

It also clearly is a cut and paste from standard AA T&C's as it refers to those recognisable service levels (breakdown/recovery/at home) yet there are not different service levels.

Hi guys - okay so I have been trying to find some info on the forum - apologies if it's already covered elsewhere but my ADHD brain is suffering severe overwhelm now so I'm just gonna ask the question - not lazy just neurodivergent! hehe

I bought my van a month ago. It was registered in August 2018 so by my maths it will be 6yrs old in August this year and it's at 71,000 miles.

I have full AA breakdown cover already through my bank.

I believe I am eligible for VW assist - do you all think I should grab it while I can?

Really sorry if this is already covered somewhere.

I think the raid assist provided in the plan is supported by the AA. Need to check the small print.

This aside it could still be worth doing. I’m waiting for a deal to come along to renew mine but the main thing putting me off is not the price or the conditions it’s the thought of having to use the dealers for another 2 years (plus side of this is that I don’t need to find a good independent garage just yet)

so I'm just gonna ask the question
Did you have a specific question or is it just "Should Badjamin buy an All In Plan" - which is kinda hard for anyone but you to answer.

If you are happy using a main dealer service and want breakdown cover then the warranty element is almost free or at least very cheap.

If you prefer using independents and have similar breakdown cover then the warranty element is potentially more "cost" for your situation.

The service plans don't cover everything. Notable exceptions I've already found are brake fluid changes and DSG servicing. They're essentially only the core service items.

The breakdown cover is mostly AA but it is through a VW dedicated call centre and there are the VW silver vans that are VW techs not AA - many people have found that VW Assist can get you booked in faster for serious faults, and sometimes bypass the diagnostics stage. Direct AA cover will not have that potential benefit.

The warranty element isn't as good as the factory warranty, but it's better than most third party warranties. Some common and significant faults are excluded, oil leaks in particular with the crankshaft seal and any perished pipes, but other faults are covered, the DMF and EGR being ones often mentioned. Double check the van warranty conditions not the car ones if searching via Google, despite both being branded "All-In" there are differences.

If your van doesn't have a complete VW service record or VW parts in its history before your ownership that may cause some friction on any warranty claim.

If you don't have any warranty cover currently (and I assume you don't) then be aware that you will not be covered for any warranty claim in the first 30 days - this is to stop people waiting until they have a fault and then taking cover out - something to keep in mind if you are waiting to see if an offer comes up.

At the end of the day it's an insurance and about certainty and predictability. If worrying about sudden costs is an issue you may value paying the cover cost. Yes it won't cover everything you may need in a service and not every fault may be covered but hopefully enough is to reduce the sudden costs.

If cost is your main concern then you may worry more about are you getting value for money.

Personally I've used main dealer service and service plans for a long time on the XC70(s) and intend to do the same on the Caravelle. I also run a regular saver type account to put money aside for work not covered - the XC70 is now at 250k and has stuff failing and the Caravelle is going to need a DSG service soon. But that fits my circumstances (I worry more about surprise costs than regular costs and I've found dealers I'm happy to use so far) what fits yours is somewhat up to you.

If you're asking because buying All-in would mean you've paid for AA cover twice (which is what I thought you were asking), then you can usually suspend your existing breakdown policy and use the balance at a later date. This is something I've done previously when buying a car that came with AA cover (though my existing cover was with the AA direct, not via a third party).

Of course, if I've misinterpreted your question, you can just ignore the above pony & trap.

Anyone know where or how the all in offers are communicated? I’m determined this time to wait for an offer before jumping (especially as it’s gone up quite a bit since I took out the last contract) and last time there was a promotion a month or less after I bought the contract

AFAIK it's just a matter of regularly checking the VW website, I don't think there is any central mailing list or similar.

A main dealer might have one though?

Seem to recall 14 ish pages of “small print “ which is then open to interpretation by VWs underwriters in some instances. Despite all the exclusions the fact you have to pay the dealers to find a fault is slightly unreasonable given you think you have a peace of mind warranty imo. They have to clearly evidence a fault so in my case this took four visits and they were then talking stripping the engine at potential £1,000s just to investigate. Ended up being a scr injector that hadn’t shown up on previous visits despite being tested. Thats all in first year of new to me 2019 plate that I purchased with the warranty thinking I was fully covered.
Crank case oil seal not covered… common fault. Consequential timing belt and water pump change not covered.
DSG oil change not covered £400
Intermittent issue with sliding door lock actuator … covered

That said I think the positive value for me is
  1. Warranty for big ticket items like dsg, egr ? , engine, touch screen.
  2. VW assist - been out numerous times for EML
  3. Service for what it’s worth but you have to put up with the health check boll*cks
Negatives
  1. Having to deal with main dealers.
  2. Delays in getting a fix
  3. Wouldn’t use them for MOT prefer my local tame provider (did get £100 good will for unused MOTs on last plan)
  4. The exclusions and wriggle room
Having said all of the above my previous has expired and I have until next May to set up new agreement so will wait and see if a discount offer turns up (some have mentioned Black Friday) then decide if cost is worth it for the warranty

My van is in VW Croydon today with low flow EGR issues, they have told me the doubt VW would authorised a replacement EGR under the all in plan for a van over 4 years old so don’t take it as read that the warranty covers the EGR, it seems it depends on the dealer, how hard they push for warranty work etc but I have had a flush and new front pipe on warranty so I still think it’s worth the money

Wow thanks everyone so far some great food for thought - very much appreciated.

The background of this is that I have no service history - at all. I have so far had the timing belt and waterpump done prior to purchase, glow plug replacement by indy VW specialist mechanics. I have no warranty left through the dealership I bought van from so am somewhat adrift and worried as the brake wear light came on 10 days ago and it could be close to a grand (through indy VW specialist mechanics) if it's discs and pads front and back - getting them done on Thurs. Admittedly this wouldn't be something covered by a plan but my MOT is due on the 8th August.

So is it worth me getting it for a year (am assuming I won't be eligible for two years) to cover MOT costs filters etc and also will it only be valid at VW garages or will it be covered at indy garages?

Have you tried contacting your local dealer?
Service history is all digital now so they should be able to print you off a copy.

The All In is a 2 year plan which you can take out for van’s up to 6yrs old or 100,000 miles. So you can be covered up to 8 yrs in total and yes it’s main dealers only.

I stopped at VW dealer on way home. It had an oil service in 2019 and a health check in 2021

Bit late for you!

Well, yes. Thought it might be helpful for someone.

Interestingly 20% off equates to about 34 quid - the amount I paid monthly when I took it out 20 months ago at the normal rate - so it must’ve gone up.
Ditto
