Warning lights and potential EGR valve issue.

Hi,

I've got a 2017 highline kombi which has just done 50k. Went in for a service a few weeks ago (local independent), which might be a coincidence. Two weeks ago, I got a flashing glow plug light after just setting off. Since then its come on a couple of times, restarting the engine seemed to clear it. I was away last week and after a long run and restarting the engine the engine management light came on.

I've purchased a carista adapter and subscription, and it listed a fair few fault codes (some ancient). I cleared them down but some have come back a few times now. I was away - and whilst I wouldn't want to drive it around with an issue my understanding is that it's a warning rather than emergency, so it could wait until I got home.


The recurrent errors I'm getting are:


- p0401
- engine 23871
- engine 16056

I've found that doing a dpf regen stopped the error from reappearing for a day or two. If I clear the errors when the engine is warm, they don't come back. Otherwise they come back after driving a short distance from cold.

From reading elsewhere on the forum it sounds like this might be an egr fault. Is that right?

If you look closely at the silver pipe it's actually covered in oil/soot where it bolts on. I'm presuming this is the egr pipe? So what I'm wondering is whether this leak is the likely cause of the issue, or whether this is likely to simply be a symptom of a blocked egr valve, which has meant the increased pressure has blown the pipe gasket.

I'm going to get it booked in with a local independent VW specialist, but I'm wondering what to expect. I'm also thinking if it's just this pipe/gasket, then I could probably change that easily enough.

The first code is insufficient EGR gas flow. Usually indicates a blocked EGR cooler, best scenario it can be flushed clean, worst needs replacing.

The cracked pipe is a common fault and can be easily changed.
 
Try get the EGRcleaned/ flushed but if it fails then its an EGR replacement, which is rather expensive but its a known fault.
 
To follow up on this ended up with the egr replaced. However, the 16056 fault has come back.. local independent garage are assuming it's a separate fault and want to replace oil pressure switch.. seems odd to me that both occured at the same time if unrelated..
