OK guys, I think maybe I’ve found the answer to these little circular vents.
During a Service, with the van up on the lift, I got a look underneath when the bottom cover was off. I could only see the passenger side; it was only about 3” long and open ended. I assume the driver side is the same. The mechanic had no idea what it was for. However, another customer in the waiting room said he thought they to allow air to pass through when raising and lowering the rising roof. That makes sense.
I met someone later who had a Mercedes Sprinter conversion and he said he had to open a window or door to ease the raising and lowering of the pop top roof.
So unless someone knows different, that looks like the answer.
