First day off since I first posted, new boots all round, problem solved !
Guys said that the wheels had never been off before, so 40k on original tyres.

We do a fair bit of motorway miles.
Once they were off you could see the rears had worn very strangely. Scrubbed the outside edge off. Never seen that on rear tyres before
