My issue is the tailgate hits the front wheel of the bike on the bike trailer. I doubt that there is a long enough ball to give me the reach, but if you don't ask, you don't get.

Nope, I like the tailgate for most other things .... just not unhitching the trailer when you want to get something in the back .... seats and folding bed stop me going in from a side sliderAh, I see!

Does anyone know why the vw fitted tow bar has wings each side but the after market version (both Westfalia) doesn’t have them,
I'm guessing it's for bumper support as this is one area that is lacking with the Westfalia kit. When I fitted my Westfalia towbar I cut up the existing steel Kombi crash bar to fit around the tow bar lateral beam. Without it (or VW's own additional support structure) there isn't an awful lot behind the plastic bumper trim.
