What Have You Done To Your Van Today?

Changed the rather black power steering fluid. I suspect It may have been in there since 2014. How have I been driving 20 years and never done it on any vehicles I’ve owned. Was a lovely job to do.

Had the Eibach rear balance springs fitted by the most excellent lads at DubDocShop near Lutterworth.

It perfectly restores the ride height lost at the rear through the weight of a 350+ kg camper conversion, stabilises whole plot and addresses the understeer that being seriously arse-saggy had wrought. I'm very happy indeed.

Nice lads, very obviously into their Transporters (the two fellers had their own vans parked up outside), highly recommended.

That’s good to hear! I have mine booked in for headlight install with these guys 👍

Over a month ago, I did a deal with our companies fire extinguisher guy swapping a cheap guitar tuner for a new 2kg powder fire extinguisher to complement the little aerosol type one in the cab door pocket.
Finally fitted into the back of the van, hopefully never have to use it on/in our van, the mess they make, wow!

Better to be safe than sorry Wayne

No need for a fire…. Many many years ago a colleague of mine on motorcycle patrol was parking his bike kerbside in a busy city centre street. As he hoisted the bike onto the centre stand he somehow dislodged the fire extinguisher which was mounted on the exterior of the near side pannier. The extinguisher went off big style and unsighted he was unable to stop it until it had emptied by which time man and machine had completely disappeared in a large cloud of white powder. To add to his joy the incident had been spotted by a CCTV operator who enquired over the radio if he was ok or needed the fire service “NEGATIVE “ was the only reply. The white cloud dispersed to reveal what could best be described as a cake decoration. Of course the radio message was overheard and within minutes the CCTV footage had been obtained, stills copied, and posted throughout the office for the addition of suitable captions.

I’ve fitted the Ablemail AMT 12 that arrived in the post today. The last one was broken, but not discovered until testing after it was installed. I sent it back for testing and replacement but Royal Mail lost it. I’ve made a claim but they want 30 days to process the claim. I called after 6 weeks and they told me the cheque was in the post but I’d have to wait up to 18 days before I could claim not to have received it. Unbelievable. If they’d not imprisoned so many staff they might be able to deliver a parcel and a letter on time.
Hopefully the Ablemail is installed correctly. I don’t know how to tell when it’s working.

Keep an eye on your SB voltage!

Is the LED lit up? If you've recently driven, it's got nothing to do!

Had the yearly Vehicle Tax reminder a week or so ago..... £335 for 12 months on the form. After having the MOT last week I thought I'd pay it today, so visited the Post Office, who asked for £345.
It went up beginning of April and the reminders were printed before then. I had the same when I paid online the same day the reminder arrived.

After I fitted mine I did some searching online for an idiots guide, and found this AI generated bumph on Google, which helped quite a bit....

The Ablemail AMT12-2 is a trickle charger/battery maintainer designed to keep a vehicle's starter battery charged from a leisure/auxiliary battery when the leisure battery is being charged by a solar or mains charger. It does this by drawing a small current from the leisure battery to trickle charge the vehicle battery, ensuring the leisure battery is charged first.
Here's a more detailed explanation of how it works:
1. Charging Source and Conditions:
• The AMT12-2 is intended to be used when a solar or mains charger is connected to the leisure battery, which is typically used for auxiliary power in vehicles like campers, vans, or RVs.
• It can also work even if the leisure battery isn't being actively charged, as long as the voltage thresholds are maintained.
2. Trickle Charging Mechanism:
• When the leisure battery voltage is above a certain threshold and the vehicle battery voltage is below a threshold, the AMT12-2 activates.
• It then charges the vehicle battery for a brief period (e.g., 3 seconds) and then pauses for a longer period (e.g., 15 seconds).
• This pulsing action helps to trickle charge the vehicle battery without excessive current draw.
• The charging current is limited to a maximum of 3A.
3. Voltage Monitoring and Configuration:
• The AMT12-2 monitors the voltages of both the leisure and vehicle batteries.
• It can be configured by the user to adjust the voltage thresholds and charging parameters, especially for different vehicle types (e.g., those with smart alternators or regenerative braking) and for lithium batteries.
• The unit also automatically detects 12V or 24V battery systems.
4. Battery Protection:
• The AMT12-2 prevents charging the vehicle battery if it's excessively flat (e.g., below 11.5V).
• It also ensures that the leisure battery is charged first before trickle charging the vehicle battery.
5. Low Current Draw:
• The AMT12-2 has a very low current draw in standby mode (less than 2mA on a 12V system), minimizing the drain on the leisure battery.
In essence, the AMT12-2 acts as a bridge between the leisure battery and the vehicle battery, ensuring that the vehicle battery stays charged when the leisure battery is being replenished by a charging source, while also prioritizing the charging of the leisure battery itself.

Some more bumph.....

If your Ablemail AMT12-2 battery maintainer isn't showing any lights, it could be due to a few factors: insufficient voltage, incorrect polarity, a faulty fuse, or a problem with the connection between the unit and the batteries.

Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot the issue:

1. Check Voltage:
  • Ensure both the vehicle and leisure battery have sufficient voltage to trigger the unit according to the selected mode. The voltage thresholds are 11.5V for the vehicle battery and a specific threshold for the leisure battery.
  • Use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the vehicle and leisure battery input terminals.
2. Check Polarity:
  • Verify that the positive and negative terminals are connected correctly.
  • Ensure the polarity is correct at the leisure battery input.
3. Check Fuses:
  • Inspect the fuses within the Ablemail AMT12-2 unit to ensure they are not blown.
4. Check Connections:
  • Make sure the connections between the Ablemail unit and the vehicle and leisure batteries are secure and clean.
  • Check for loose, dirty, or corroded terminals, which can disrupt the power flow.
5. Check Program Mode:
  • The LED should flash according to the program mode selected. If the LED is not flashing correctly, it could indicate a problem with the unit's programming or a faulty connection.
6. Battery Condition:
  • If the leisure battery is significantly discharged, the Ablemail unit might not recognize it. In this case, you might need to use a dedicated battery charger to bring the battery to a suitable voltage level before the Ablemail unit can function.
7. Contact Support:
  • If you've checked all the above and the unit still isn't working, it's best to contact RoadPro support or the manufacturer for further assistance.
By following these steps, you should be able to identify the cause of the problem and get your Ablemail AMT12-2 battery maintainer working again.
