Wi-fi

Having tried most of them I have to say that EE is far better in terms of speed and coverage. I use the Huaewi now and it works pretty much anywhere with the optional antennae. I had a Netgear one before and it failed twice in 18 months. I pay £20 a month for 15gb with EE but I am gonna check out the Virgin deal if they use EE!

EDIT: we now have a THREE.CO.UK PAYG card 12GB for £30 that lasts for 12mnths. (or 24GB £42)

Virgin are back doing crazy monthly sim only data deals again - Pay Monthly SIM Only Deals & Contracts | Virgin Mobile

I've got two of these sims now, one for my bus and one for the wife's Q5, we have wifi everywhere these days.
Some awesome deals there, my current contract ends in a couple of months and I’m looking what to get. The only problem is I’m pretty much tied to Vodafone, there’s hardly any reception on any of the other carriers in my area of South Yorkshire/North Lincs, and none at all at my house! Do you know which carrier Virgin use?

There are actually only four UK mobile networks – EE*, Three, O2* and Vodafone* (check signal using Ofcom's Mobile Coverage Checker).

'Piggybacking' and which network really provides your mobile signal
Yeah I know there are only 4 networks, I was hoping that one of the cheap resellers was using Vodafone. It’s a no go then :( You have to drive 4 miles from my house before you get 1 bar on EE. Don’t take any notice of those coverage maps, they’re pure fiction.

TakTalk & Lebara use the Vodaphone system apparently.

Mobile Networks Using Vodafone Coverage
The following table shows a list of mobile networks offering coverage from Vodafone. On all of these networks, you’ll get the same coverage as customers on Vodafone, but sometimes with lower prices (e.g. a cheaper monthly bundle or lower international rates):

VOXI Vodafone ✔ ✔ ✔ Check VOXI Coverage
* TalkTalk Mobile closed to new customers in April 2017. TalkTalk home broadband customers are now offered a discounted contract from O2.

Besides Vodafone, only Lebara Mobile and VOXI are open to new customers at present.

Talkmobile is a low-cost sub-brand of Vodafone, available only to existing customers already on the network. Customers with an existing Talkmobile plan are able to stay on their plan, but are gradually being encouraged to switch over to Vodafone.

I've been lucky with Virgin and had strong signal pretty much everywhere we've camped or driven, I live down South and only travel down this way.

Thanks, never heard of Lebara. Unfortunately no cheaper than direct to Vodafone but could be a useful option for anyone who travels abroad a lot

Funny when we first went to Wales we found Virgin was the only mobile that would give a signal but just lately O2 are stronger. I use Tesco mobile so that uses O2 so I,m not unhappy though I would not mind an unlocked travels hotspot for my caravan

I've just bought a virgin sim £20 a mth for 120gig to use at my static near bala. Im on ee on my phone and get a good signal there. So im gonna stick the sim in a router and try it this weekend. Theres a 14 day cooling off period with it so if its no good i can just send it back.

I've got the 4g Huawei dongle too and a Virgin data sim. I got a crazy deal with Virgin, it was a special deal 12 month contract, 100gb a month, 30gb roll over each month for £20 a month all in. I think they only offer 40gb at the moment, but it was far cheaper than using other top up solutions.

The dongle works perfectly, I've had no issues in the UK at any locations so far, there's always been enough signal to keep the kids quiet and allow me to browse on my phone.

I leave the dongle plugged in 24/7 so I've always got a data connection in the bus, great for streaming Apple Music etc. If my wife is taking the kids on a trip she takes the dongle with her in her car so the kids can sit on their iPads.

They are brilliant, cannot recommend them enough.
How do you keep it plugged in 24-7 insert coin without it draining your battery ?

Am I missing something?
Why don't you use the hotspot on your mobile ?

Thats totally doable, and what we done early on, but . . . . . . .

i was too lazy to keep switching it on,off,on,off,on,off.on.off,on,off,on,off,on,off.on.off

as every time it the hotspot was on, it disables the phones wifi, so it needed switching back on to connect the phone for home/work.

then back on hotspot for the van. etc etc etc etc.

i soon got fed up of the whole thing. . . . . Now its easy. All phone and tablet wifis switched on. and just jump from home to van to work . . . simples

I have bought a WiFi for the van as I run my blackview dash cam from it but the internet states the WiFi has a long standby battery but mine only lasts 2 days at best so am looking to be able to keep it on permanent charge without affecting my van battery

You need to power them both from a decent leisure battery.
