I'm also in a similar situation having done a deal with a standard H4 van that was offered with a huge discount, hopefully given time the LED conversion will come down in price (Currently £2250+VAT) or an alternative will be available?
In the short term I'm going to get some brighter H4bulbs...
Ok, I've decided to 'upgrade' the H4 headlight bulbs.
New bulbs have been purchased.
Any hints 'n' tips as to the best way of getting the 'old' bulbs out...?
It's pretty straightforward to loosen the metal retaining clips and remove the black plastic caps over the rear of the headlight unit...
Test them first, before trying to fit them, I fitted mine and then had to take them out because of bulb failure light on the dash, just take the conection of the back of the H4 bulb on the near side as you have a bit more room, plug the philips/Led/ Hid units in one at a time, just leave...
I dont know how long you have had them, but honestly 5 min job to test, use the passengers side, take off the dust cover pull the lead off the back off the H4 bulb and plug it into the Philips unit, just let it sit on the bonnet slam panel, try hi/lo beam and see if you get a bulb failure light...
H4bulbs has twin filament and H7 has one filament. Therefor i guess the light output in one H4 bulb is lower on dipped compared with H7 on dipped since the dual filamet on the H4. Also the H4 has three connecting pins on the back, and H7 has two.
My father had the same issue on a Kawasaki...
Right then, installed the Philips 150+ racing vision H4bulbs. Been out for a drive and honestly I think the improvement is significant.
Previously, it was hard to tell on totally dark roads if the lights were on. If another car approached or if there were any street lighting you couldn't see...
Good evening Dave's Dad, thanks for the message, I bought two " Ring" xenonmax H4bulbs today, they say on the box that they are 100% brighter than a standard bulb, Ring sell 40% 60 % and 100% brighter bulbs. these ones I bought from a car motor factors where I do some work and cost £24.00.
I...
@Polzeylad, of course one candle in an open field is no use, one candle in a focused reflector is useful. It strikes me that the design of reflector to the H4 bulb is wrong, especially as the H7 Lights seem to perform much more effectively yet will have the same legal maximum wattage...
In truth that mini I posted had H4bulbs admitidly they were 100watt so not legal but they are not a patch on the ones you have today. Back then they were brilliant. :)
Is it to change the H4bulbs? If so, the lights do not need to be removed to do this.
For the driver's side I just removed the top half of the air box to get access, much easier.
Remove the 2 air flow sensor plugs (they don't just pull off, there is a catch you need to release to allow them to...
@Polzeylad Perhaps VW Commercial Vehicles would be kind enough to define EXACTLY what the standards are that their vehicles meet to drive on UK roads particularly in respect of the H4bulbs. A question for VW is "Do you carry out random quality checks of H4bulbs from suppliers to ensure the...
There is a middle ground with headlamps that upgrades the standard H4 (bulb type) single headlamp to the H7 twin headlamps which comes as part of the light and vision pack (iirc) at a more reasonable £400'ish. The general concensus and I include myself in this, is that the standard H4 set up is...
