‘SAFELOCK - CHECK OWNER'S MANUAL’ message on MFD

Actions are not steps.
Each line (action) is an individual way of locking the vehicle.
First 2 "actions" allow to locking with SAFE-LOCK activated and remaining three with SAFE-LOCK disabled.

First press on the key button locks with safelock (deadlocks) enabled - door can not be opened from inside or out

press the lock button on the key again and the dead locks are released - door can not be opened from outside but can be opened from inside.
Snap....

I just went out to check and when I lock the van the LED in the drivers door by the lock button does not flash at all? Tried waiting but nothing.

I guess somebody disconntected the LED when the door panel was removed and forgot to plug it back in?

Hi All,

Any advice appreciated. Please see attached photo. Message appears at ignition turn off.

My question, like me, is simple - What does this actually mean?

Many Thanks

It means when you lock the doors they will be deadlocked and unable to be opened from inside. Press the lock button on the key again to release the deadlock

There’s no such thing as a daft question ;)
As you’ll see with the threads I’ve merged yours with above, it’s been asked before

My apologies. I assumed I was being so personally dense that no-one else would have this question. I did, in my defence, actually RTFM but afterwards I was none the wiser.

Thanks again.

Blimey. That was lightning fast. Many thanks.

I figured it was 'advice' rather than a 'warning' but I wish they didn't use capitals and ! marks.

I was aware of the deadlocking etc but not that the message related to that in an informational way.

Thanks again.

It’s like when you first buy a smartphone.. no manual, just expectations that you’ll understand their jargon!

The other thing to note (and I was too afraid to ask) is that when the instructions say "press again" - what they mean is quite quickly like you are double clicking a mouse button.

If you press the button, pause, press again then often it will just repeat the single button lock cycle.

As a bonus bit of info the same technique works should you need to physically lock the van with the key - a quick double lock will disable the deadlocks should you need to.

I wonder what they mean by deadlocks.
To lower the risk of a car-jacking - -- come on when you go over 10ph or something.
Or an extra barrel, which I definitely didn't see when I changed the driver's door catch mech

When the deadlocks are on you can't open the door from inside if the window is smashed.(So when van parked over night)

Without deadlocks, you just smash the window and pull the handle to open the door.

So a security feature.

Auto lock above 10mph is a separate feature....that just locks the door, but as you say preventing people from opening the back of side of the van when stopped at lights etc. it car jacking.

Fyi.... One button pres on the remote will: lock-deadlock.

A second lock button press will, unlock the deadlocks.... For when you lock the van with people inside.... Ie at a petrol station.... Meaning they can double pull the handle from inside to get out of needed.

You can hear the locks from outside.. one clonk, two clongs, three clocks.

Just to add a note that initially with my 6.1 I couldn't get this to work. The key is it's a quick double press (think like a mouse double click or screen double tap) not two "normal" presses.

Bonus note - it also works if you need to lock with the key - two quick turns to "lock" from the resting position will do the same thing. That might be handy if you need to use something like a surf or emergency key.

With mine, a second long press is recognised by indicators flashing once (maybe twice), then the windows wind up, and the mirrors fold.

I originally followed this thread because I was looking for ideas for an aftermarket deadlock for added security.

If they already have a built-in deadlock system then is it daft to fit deadlocks too?..

That's the "comfort close" function

No, the standard deadlocks simply disconnect the interior handle mechanism whereas additional deadlocks mean there are two locks to be defeated to open the door. After market deadlocks tend to be self contained (so no handle levers or cables to attack) and installed with shielding.

Yes, this is what deadlocks mean to me.
Vw need to come up with a new name because it's not a deadlock.

I must have activated "comfort close" when I was messing around with vcds last

Well it's still a deadlock, but as it has the options for handle connections and isn't generally as well shielded it's not as defended but it will work fine to prevent most smash and grabs.

The advantage of aftermarket units is that the bad guys have an incentive to research how to defeat the factory options as they are in every van, but there are lots of aftermarket units so that's less likely. Unfortunately this might not prevent the oiks having a good at the door skins anyway with a battery cutting tool to see if they can get in.
