The approved sizes and correct sizes are 255/45 or 235/50 - I would go for the 255 to give you a bit more protection over the alloy - Stick to the sizes VW suggest

Totally agree. But if you can stick to correct tyre sizes, then why would you change away from it. Especially on a brand new California or any new vehicle.
 
245/50r18 gives you 6mm extra side wall. I run this size with summer tyres. Given new tyre tread depth of 8mm(ish), the more miles you put on this size, the closer it gets to equalling the rolling circumference of a new factory fit tyre. Probably the most mechanically sympathetic approach I could find to both aid comfort and slightly improve the aesthetics. Slightly reduces the arch gap, without lowering springs.

Mine came with a 20mm drop as standard, and `I didn't want to go any lower, because we go off-road.
I changed the tyres to 235/60/17 and fitted some 25mm spacers and WOW, totally transformed.
I'll always fit 1 size larger tyres, all other things being equal,
but if I had a small output engine, and carried big loads, I might stick with OEM sizing.
 
Or you could go for 235/55/18, plenty of tyre choices in that size.
Would that give a more comfortable ride than 255/45?

Had a screw in the shoulder of the NSF tyre (vanco conti`s) which i repaired myself with the tyre knots couple of months ago.

it started leaking the other day and tyre shop wouldn't repair it. . . . . (no repairs on shoulder/side wall) =[

so new tyre needed . . .

vanco conti £179 !!
mid range tyre £ 120 !!
Budget £89 !!

thats about £100 more for these 18" rims compared to the old T5.1 17" rims.

so went for the budget . . . .

i use nothing else and have done for years as my mate is an Accelera dealer (trade prices too)

examples:

£52 inc vat 255/45/18 Accelera XL 103Y each

What are they like in the rain and do they last? I've had my current all season tyres, granted they are not premium (landsail) and they are down to 3mm in less than a year.
 
they are ok in the rain, u pays your money and makes your choice.
my personal experiences are very good with these.
real value for money.

cy294 well in a year i do 2500 miles in one car and 25,000 in my other so icant tell ya how long yours last.

so average for me is about 12k for a front set. (rears last longer (non driven, non steer))

I liked the Accelera... a good all round cost effective tyre..

A soft tyre is more grippy, but wears quicker.

A hard tyre last longer but less grippy.

I munch through tyres every 12k ish so cost Is a major factor for me..... I'd like fancy branded tyres. But it makes no sense to me.

the vanco conties the van come with wore out just as quick as a mid budget tyre...... so why pay more?(just my personal opinion)

It has mate - on B14's. I'm not sure how low, but down quite a long way....it was done by New Wave Custom Conversions in Cardiff and they went as low as possible
 
Cheers...thought so. Must say they look great on the van! If I stuck them on mine as it is there would be gaping black holes around the top of them glwts
