I do around 30k a year on 20s (April till December) and then 10K over the winter on 17s. Having had 3 transporters and run everything from 16 to 20 wheels I can honestly say I feel very little difference between 235 55 17 and 255 40 20 in regards to ride. I have VW spec coilovers (KW / Eibach combo) wound down to max - 70mm.
Worse ride was 275 40 20 on stock suspension. Best was 255 45 18 on Eibach.
Tyre pressure also makes considerable difference to ride but as I do high mileage I generally keep pressures up to aid with economy.
We are taking ours to Skye on 20's with a spare 20" stuck on a Bak Rak tow ball carrier. Suspension by Steve @CRS Performance ,coupled with Michelin cc2's makes for a very comfortable ride. Cant fault it.
