2016 T6 102, Stolen / Recovered. Charging Fault [Resolved]

notchback

Member
Hi.
I'm new to the forum and just purchased my first T6 (Had a T5 for years) Hope someone might be able to help to resolve a problem?

I've just purchased a Stolen / Recovered 2016 Kombi from an insurance company. It's only done 20,000 miles, in reasonably good condition too.
Basically, the van had been parked up for several months and the battery was completely dead. I replaced the battery and it started first turn of the key and drives perfectly, however, when I put a multi-meter on the battery I discovered the alternator is not charging.

As far as I can see, all the cables look to be connected correctly, and there is no visible damage. I have also noticed that the instrument cluster has previously been removed and refitted quite badly (the rev counter is slightly twisted anti clockwise?) I'm guessing there must be something in the cluster or behind it the thieves needed access to? Is there anything in this area that could potentially affect the charging circuit?

I do have Ross-Tech VCDS, and after running a scan it comes up with 2 faults, Codes posted below:

Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thank you!

This might sound daft, but have you checked it’s putting a charge in when it’s driven?

They may have been looking for a tracking device.

Batt reg fault.

Look at battery neg post and make sure the power sensor is connected.

The alternator won’t charge if the battery is over 80%. Turn on the lights heater, heated sets if you have and test again.
might need to replace the module on the battery negative terminal.

Hi, yes I collected the van from Kent and had to drive it back to Cardiff. It flattened the battery twice (we had to stop and swap the battery from my T5 so we could continue driving it)

Hi, Yes the small connector is on the negative terminal, and I have traced that cable back as far as I could and I could find no damage. I could do a continuity test if I knew where the other end of those wires were though?

They may have been looking for a tracking device.
That could make sense, the main computer brain isn't back there is it? I wondered if they might have been trying to replace it to disguise the identity of the van perhaps?

I've no idea, I do know that thieves will often strip a vehicle looking for a tracker, but it's anybody's guess what they were up to! (Sadly they didn't think about doing an honest days work instead.)

Useful information you didn’t mention
sounds like a can bus fault in that there is no communication between engine module and BCU and battery module. Are all the fuses present and good? (look for fuse slots with both metal inserts but no fuse)

The OP mentions.

BCU,
Battery regulator,
Generator,(alternator)

And no comms.

So you need to start with the basics and see what the no com is.

Like @Loz said check all the fuses are present and in the correct slot. Including the ones under the battry.

The BCM is above the peddles...above behind the clocks.

BCM and ECM must have comms for it to start....

So look over the alternator connections also.... its LIN bus back to ECM.

Post another scan after clearing all faults.

Also post a full scan of all the present modules, or the list of present modules.

Looking like the main issue is a no com with alternator.

Thanks for your suggestions, I'm going to pull the battery tray out in the morning and confirm all the fuses are ok. The clocks had previously been removed, so you think it is possible they have disturbed something back there? Although the van starts and drives fine.

I'm fairly new to modern vehicles so still learning a lot about the Ross-Tech software and terminology. What is meant by LIN bus back to ECM?

Thanks.

so with all that you are looking issues with the glow plug system.

issues with no com to alternator

issues with BCM/ECM comms

*************************************************

This could be an absolute can of worms due to the unknown of whats happened to the van in the passed?

it could be an fault alternator? or damaged wires?

possible BCM/ECU/clocks swap to steal van? - are the key all original and working?

sound like a nice project to get into, but some advanced VAG diagnostics are needed.

you need to know about CAN & LIN bus diagnostics and some. decent back probes and testers.

*********************

if it was me, i would.

back probe alternator outputs and data connection back to ecm.

check main positive supply from alternator to ebox and starter battery.

read data PIDS for battery reg unit and alternator.

start with the main battery and charging problems first.

them move onto the engine glow plugs.

Thanks for advice, its much appreciated.
Yes, I have one original key that works. The van had been parked up with a dead battery for quite a few months. However it's very low mileage and generally in excellent condition.
It's going to be a process of elimination I think, I will try and work through your suggestions tomorrow, but will also remove the clocks to find out what has been messed with back there.

Hi,
I've pulled the clocks out this morning, found nothing too unusual, so have replaced them all correctly.
I then pulled the battery tray out and accessed the Big fuses and relays underneath and found Fuse Number 1 which is a 225Amp Mega fuse had blown.
I've ordered a new one from TPS. But I wonder what could have caused this fuse to blow? Most likely it is the cause of my charging problem though.
Any suggestions much appreciated!

As @Dellmassive says it would be worth you signing up as a VIP member. The fuse layouts in the download section will show you why you need to sort out your problems with fuse 1 and also the missing cable from fuse 8.

Yes, I do intend to sign up as it seems very worthwhile.
I don't think that fuse no:8 is supposed to have a cable there, I believe it is for different model vans after searching through the internet about it?

(There's certainly no cables loose underneath)

Fuse 8 is for the heated windscreen relay and the glow plug activation control unit. Maybe the unit including cable has been removed during the theft?
Oh Really! I saw on another forum it was possibly 'spare'.
I am also getting error messages on glow plugs so if that is the case with fuse 8, that might explain things.
Odd thing to steal though, since it would appear that nothing else has been touched/damaged on the van, and the battery tray and all parts to get at it were assembled correctly too.

Where is the glow plug activation unit located?

Also, How to I go about signing up for VIP?
