2019 204PS BiTDI engine failure

Hello, new to group despite owning several transporters.

Could really do with some help and advice from others who have experienced engine failure due to low cylinder compression.

Van started running lumpy in low gears, then came the exhaust smoke, immediately stopped driving, P100400 fault on diagnostics, pointing to cylinder 1, replaced but same problem so had recovered to VW approved who has simply said needs a new engine.

Aware of the EGR issues and although out of warranty the van has only done 50k miles so going to take to ombudsman.

No engine light has ever come up.

Would like to hear other experiences people have had, does this sound similar, did you get it resolved with or without VW

Any help would be appreciated.

whats your story so far?

mines just gone back into the dealer for the oil test - which it failed.

now they are speaking to the warranty dept to see what additional tests are needed.

my CXEB:

what did you replace in cylinder 1?

have you got any more details from the report from VW?

is your van covered under the TPI?

have you mentioned the TPI to the VW garage?

have you got any extra extended warranty on the van?

was it using oil, did the oil light come on at any point?

50K is very millage, normaly the engine wear seem to be around the 80K mark. and turbos 100K+ mark.

assuming you need - a long block engine + turbo + cat + dpf?

or is the engine good but turbo bad?

Did you buy the van from a trade seller, and how long ago? Irrespective of warranties etc the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you some degree of redress as far on as six years. They'll try bullpois and dodge, but in my experience a letter with a printout of the legislation and a completed small claims form bucks their ideas up.

Small claims limit is usually £10k, but you can bet a repair wo t actually cost them that much.

you have a few options.

get a third party indy to strip and rebuild that engine,

get a second hand engine from a crash damaged van - but try and get a 2019 onwards van.

go to VW for a good will 50/50 by complaining to VWCV UK

Darkside Developments to the repair - but the use a new engine from VW.

trade the van in VW dealership for another - they will take it in as they can repair and sell on.

The injector was changed but did not make any difference.

They have just told me that due to low compression, they have to follow VW Protocol and next stop is new engine!

What is TPI?

No, no extra warranty

Didn’t seem to have any oil issue

Nothing has been mentioned on the turbo other than they would replace that too.

We bought from VW approved in 2022

I am going to write to VW with a complaint first but with the conversations I have already had with them they don’t to seem to care. The full focus was that the injector fitted was not a VW part and that apparently caused the engine to fail

Then you have a good legal claim against the seller for a substantial proportion of the repair cost.

The injector claims they're making are pure hokum, as you only replaced it to attempt a repair after the breakdown.

Stand your ground on the Consumer Rights Act. They'll bluff, bluster and misdirect, but the regs won't go away unless you give in.

Does anyone know if the cxeb issue is still problem on the 2019 plates?

Yes and no.

The CXEB was changed to the CXEC around that time.

So you could have either engine. Or even the revised CXEB.

Its CXEB! So we will be one of the cursed!?
maybe or maybe not. . . .

VW made revisions in 2019 to fix the problem.

but i dont know any more than that. . .

possibly from an engine serial number onwards?
