4motion - worth the extra cost?

Relatively new to T6 ownership, I picked up a T6 LWB T32 150 Manual 4Motion in October last year.

You can prise this thing from my cold dead hands.

My mum has a T32 SWB FWD, and my dad a T28 LWB. I’ve driven both and they’re great… but I’ve found the engine braking very unsettling, making you feel like you’re going to leapfrog over the front axle. In my 4Mo, it’s more balanced… closer to RWD, but not like pulling a parachute - how it felt on my BMW, or on a motorbike… something in the middle. Funny that.

When pushing on around Surrey/Sussex A/B roads, I love that you can stick your foot in mid corner and pull yourself out.

Equally, I love how planted and settled it feels when cruising at lazy speeds. It does waft along nicely.

quick one to the TDI150 lot. what are you getting for MPG? struggling to get 27 urban and 31 is a tease on a longer run. fuel to fuel ends up around 28. with European travel being our expectation this is a whole new bill. I might be just seeing how much this country is falling apart in terms of cost of living here too but need to clarify.

Initially I was trying to avoid getting a 4Mo, as I wanted to be able to cover miles without a fuel economy penalty, but as far as I can see… there isn’t one.

I do mostly A/B roads, with some minimal motorway miles. I’ve just got out of a mapped 330d Manual, and I’ve grown accustomed to ‘making progress’, so I imagine one could get better MPG than me, but I struggle to get less than 39mpg average for a tank. Admittedly that is for an empty van as it stands, but it’s exactly the same as my mums van on the same journey - a T32 150bhp SWB T6 full camper. I can’t imagine I’ll lose tonnes when I convert.

I'm a fan of 4Motion, my T6 is 4Motion, but there simply has to be a fuel penalty, even if you haven't noticed it.
The 4Motion van weighs more than 200KG more than an otherwise identical 2WD T6.
You cannot move that extra 200KG around without burning more fuel, it's fundamentally impossible.
For my use a 4Motion is almost essential, but if I lived and used my van in an urban area, I wouldn't have wanted 4Motion.
Horses for courses!

Oh absolutely, it’s basic physics. My point was simply that the fuel economy penalty really isn’t that bad.

For my use case, I don’t need 4Motion, as it’s only going to see road, wet grassy campsites and the odd fire road. However, dynamically I much prefer it to a FWD van.

Initially I was looking for a FWD van, it’s just that the right one came up, and it happened to be 4Mo.

39?!?!?! I'm dodging speed pumps for 31! What wheels and tyres are you running?

it’s on standard 16” Clayton’s with Hankooks for now…

It will be getting 20”s and a drop, when I can afford it. I will report back.

I do think it’s perhaps my commute, which is mostly clear A/B roads at 50-60mph.

ah. im on 20's and for some reason they (the seller) fitted 275's although I have very similar wheels that look great on 235's on my old van so looking to swap them on to my 4mo and see how it goes. will report back if there is any interest in results. no expecting your numbers but to beat BMW numbers would be great.

In terms of my driving I do a fair few motorway miles and ots of country roads as its half work van and half camper. I work on windfarms hence the need for a 4mo.

FWIW - depending on your tyre profile, if for example it's 5% out on the speedo, it will be 5% out on it's MPG estimations as it think's doing less miles. So maybe there's 3-5mpg right there in bad maths!
