5th gear ratio replacement options.

I’m looking to change the 5th gear ratio in my 5 speed box. I’m looking for to drop the revs and find a more suitable return on mpg, I have done some homework into it and have a guy ready to do the job but I’d be grateful if anybody else has carried out a similar conversion and what results they gained from it. Many thanks.

I am not sure if lower revs through higher gearing always translates into improved mpg. It would depend on a number of things engine torque and spread over the intended speed range.

I put a 6 speed gear knob on mine, it's made no difference at all... but it does light up.

It’s really trying to find whether it’s going to be the 0.62 or 0.66 ratio. Find gearbox ratio charts isn’t as easy as it used to be, but I’ve got a test drive in a T6 5speed later this week as starting datum.

What's your gearbox code? Ratios are in the workshop manual, I can paste here once you confirm.

Hi there, that would be much appreciated. I believe it's a standard fitted 02Z 5 speed, I need check on the box itself. I have got a picture of the chassis sheet though which declares it as FJL.
Any help is much appreciated as I have it booked for the job in 3 weeks time.
