84PS... underpowered for a conversion?

Thanks Ian, Blimey, I've been trying to figure out how to post on here for days, looks like I've finally done it right. Not picked the van up yet, so I'm not sure how it will perform. Yes I've read we can have it chipped anyway, I asked the seller what the engine size was and he was a bit vague. I'm now wondering that's why hes selling it, he had a tow bar fitted and was hoping he could tow a trailer with a motorbike on it, I wont be towing anything, so hope 84bhp will be fine.
Rob

Mine is also a 102 SWB which I had chipped to 150 and makes a bit differance, but not sure 5 months down the line that it's worth it. Had it done for towbar to be fitted which now I'm not doing.

Not so long back 84bhp in a van would have been something to be quite chuffed about! As mentioned above it'll be geared to suit and with the market as it is at the minute if you really don't like the van it'll be a doddle to sell on.

how quick do you want to get there ...

SWB is designed to carry a euro pallet of bricks
LWB 1 .5 pallet.
The gears are set to comfortably carry that load looks like about 1.7 ton - 1500 kg ...... ish per pallet
Worse case is you have to change gear going up a really steep hill.

it seems no one ever advertises or chips their van for the best possible fuel efficiency . they all go for more power

the vans can payload says it can carry
  • T28 - 2,800kg or 2.8 tonnes
  • T30 - 3,000kg or 3.0 tonnes
  • T32 - 3,200kg or 3.2 tonnes
so get it chipped then it increases the power and the change then burns out your Turbo on our smaller BHPs

a new Renault Traffic boasts its 180 bhp lol as standard

New to this forum, not sure what I'm doing yet. I've only just put a deposit down on a T6 campervan. Only just find out on a HPI check the the engine is only 84bhp, I dont drive fast but just a bit worried it might be underpowered, what do you folk think? Sorry if this subject has been covered before.
@Roblee you might want to check it before picking it up it says here.... there are various BHP versions of the engine. All have increased in power from the T5. 1 which means that they are all now suitable to convert to a camper. There are three to choose from – 102, 150 or 204 BHP. are you sure your not buying a redressed T5 to look like a T6 a 102 bhp is a 76 KW

Well there's not much else a traffic can boast about.
it also has nice flat side walls the awning would butt up to and square insides to hang cupboards up on lol and under passanger seat storage that turns into a computor table / clip board lol

There's a few on here with 84 bhp campers that are perfectly happy.

Can you get a test drive?

Mine's 102 and I am happy enough, don't rush anywhere unless the M6 is empty and I have 30 minutes to get to Troutbeck Head before the gates shut at 8pm

I have a 112bhp 5 speed and it's more than enough on 90% of driving. It's happy cruising at 80 - 85 on the motorway. It's when you get to Cornwall and the hills get BIG that a few more horses would be nice, especially with the family a full tank of fuel and 90 liters of water on board. I would be cautious of chipping these vans the diff is made of cheese especially if you combine with large wheels.

Add some red stripes and highlights, extra bhp and no effect on the engine components :slow rofl:

@hodgo10 112 kw is a 150 bhp a 112bhp is a 83.5 kw so the smaller engines were around in the beginning then i stand corrected

@Roblee i didt think you was buddy but when i read the bit that there are only three to choose from – 102, 150 or 204 BHP. in T 6 from what i thought was a good source i panicked to warn you the others were dropped there was also T27 too

it's what we do in here try to help..... and i admitted i was wrong and i did further studies . kind regards Nick

The lower power engines are going to need to work harder in a fully loaded campervan.
On the plus side the fuel economy will still be much better than a bi turbo engine, this could be a significant saving if you are doing long tours.
IMO when it comes to selling it may not be many peoples first choice so make sure you don’t pay over the odds in the campervan madness that’s controlling current prices.
