Adblue - Information From Aa Recovery

Whilst visiting me to sort out my duff battery I had a discussion with our local AA Recovery man. He says that they're doing a lot of repairs to cars (and vans) with AdBlue and he says that you should not run it too low before topping up. When I said our warning light comes on at 1500 miles he suggested I should top up before that.

Interesting. I've topped up at the 1500 mile mark both times I've had to do it but will make sure I don't let it get lower than that now.

is anybody aware of the shelf/tank life of addblue? taking mine off the road for a bit soon but dont want to fill up the tank completely and come back to pure water further down the line??

Any explanation why?

It’s last for ever on the shelf. But if you leave it open to the air, it can dry out leaving crystals.
If you let the level in you can go down to much, the crystals could get sucked into the pump causing issues. I agree with the AA topping up ASAP

Makes sense, thanks for the advice

I was thinking the same - you can see the crystals around the filler cap

Interesting? Picked up my kombi the weekend and spoke about adblue. Advice was top up when instructed by the van only not when you feel like it?

I'm not sure dealers know much about anything these days. The AA guy said it's a common thing with all adblue vehicles (not just T6's) and he sees it a lot. I think there's no harm, in having a full adblue tank

Think your right. Will need to do some googling tonight.

It makes more sense to wait until you can put a whole 10L containers-worth in in one hit, than to p*ss about putting less in more frequently and then storing the unused solution. Then you can open a fresh container and use it right away.

This may have been done to death elsewhere, if so please forgive me-- I've noticed that with my 2 previous vw sharans and now T6 vw always advise using their own stuff which meets spec ISO 22241-1. Everything I see on garage forecourts and presumably in the pumps is only ISO 22241. I've always stuck to getting the vw stuff in 10l tubs and never letting the tank get very empty. T6 seems much more thirsty for it than the sharan was though. Anyone using non vw adblue without any problems ?

Halfords is fine so far but only stuck 10L in since new.

Cheers clufus, likewise have put in about 10l maybe a bit more and at ~ 4000 miles now. good to know the Halfords stuff works if you need any in a hurry. Sharan used to use ~ 1l per 1000 miles, but it was a pre deiselgate ea189 engine !!

An Esso garage not far from us has ad blue pumps. Works out much cheaper than containers and no faffing with awkward fill nozzles.

I'm just under 13k miles now and have never used VW branded Adblue. No issues with dpf light or any other engine issues so far.
