AdBlue top-up issue (merge)

Hi
I dont know of any cleaning procedure on the van
i only know of day to day services been done and cam belt etc
I've had the van since feb it was showing 3500 miles ish range its when i got it, i done 500 miles in it before i topped it up ( but i topped it to the top not knowing how to fill the adblue up
it reset to 6500 mile straight away BUT after about 100-150 miles it dripped to 650 miles warning
i read that i shouldnt of topped it to the top so i drained some out took it for a drive reset to 6500 but again after 100-200 miles it drops to 650 miles going down to 500 miles then it resets back to 6500 mile it just keeps repeating 6500 to 650 miles

Then vw drained the tank put new adblue in and reset the EML light
but about 150 or so miles later i pulled away on a steep hill the adblue light came on straight away to 650 miles it will clear to 6500 if i keep driving it but will jump back down to 650 soon
I've not done any long journeys in it since the first week i had it i dont trust it one bit

hope some of this is of some help
Thanks

im wishing my T5.1 back at the moment

Hard to believe it's the issue. I have tried to duplicate the issue by filling to the brim now for over 7 years on several T6s - no luck this far. Never seen the sensor giving false values tank full to the brim.

it drops to 650 miles going down to 500 miles
Just to clarify - is this what you get - range 650 miles + a spanner but WITHOUT fill amounts?
AdBlue_FAIL_1000_km_IMG_20190217_125315.jpg

I think the next step would be to update engine software 3771 -> 6168 just to eliminate well-known gremlins. The cycling remaining 6500/650 miles tastes like a software thing.

Of course the AdBlue injector is a candidate. VCDS could be used to monitor injected AdBlue amount and NOx levels to verify the case.

Yes thats what i get 650 miles and spanner ( but without refill amount )
the only time I've seen a refill amount was when i first got the van im sure it was at 3500 miles on the counter

im sure i could clean the injector its got to be worth a try ?

Absolutely.

The refill amounts appear when there is 6500 km (4000 miles) remaining range - above that only range is shown.

ill speck to vw tomorrow and ask for software update , not sure they will do it though

Well, as expected. 01-Engine reads sensor correctly and estimates the remaining range accordingly but 17-Instruments reports very differently. Quite a mystery why the range gets tangled.
Code:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Address 01: Engine (04L 906 056 KG)

20:25:57
IDE03142 Remaining vehicle distance until reducing agent deficiency 9701.080 km
IDE10249 Reducing agent fill level sensor: act. value 122 mm

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Address 17: Instruments (7E0 920 970 S)

20:28:05
IDE00778 Urea operating range 600 km

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Most likely the rest of the parameters would also indicate discrepancies. Anyways, the above is the outcome. Just need to figure out the cause.

So am I right in saying
the tank level is reading right
but the ESC is thinking it’s low on Adblue
?

Yes, engine is reading AdBlue level correctly (the sensor is wired to engine controller) and calculates the range based on level and on earlier AdBlue consumption.

However, the dash display (17-Instruments) tells something else.

Without the issue the range in engine and dash display (17-Instruments) are the same.

Vw are telling me that head office won’t let them update it to the latest adblue software as there’s no updates for my van but it’s on 3771 software

Vw are telling me that they have adjusted the perimeters on the adblue ?
So it's fixed now - they say?

Interesting....
Meanwhile - a van which has got the update (Engine software 04L 906 056 KG 6168):

yes they think it is fixed my be it is ?
one thing has changed on the dash since they looked at today is now the adblue count down is saying( 6000 ) miles I've never seen it say that !
so im hopping its going to start counting down now instead of of jumping to 650 miles we will see

A big THANKS for your help
Ill let you know how the van is getting on as it needs miles put on it now to see if the fault returns

THANKS AGAIN

Hi so I’ve put about 600 miles on the van the adblue counter went down to 6000 miles now it’s just flashed up 650 miles warning today so it’s not fixed where do I go now with ? Might buy a ford ?

Oh no, indeed it seems that the issue was not fixed. After the reset it just took some time for the ECU to conclude the status.

Please post a fresh VCDS Auto-Scan.
Also would be useful to recheck the measuring values below - just to confirm again the discrepancy between engine and dash display.

The crucial values in the data are the bolded ones.

01-Engine

IDE03142 Remaining vehicle distance until reducing agent deficiency
IDE10249 Reducing agent fill level sensor: act. value

17-Instruments

IDE00778 Urea operating range

Shouldn't the VW rectify the situation as they already have charged for the repair???

Yes I think so I’m going away on Monday for a week and when I get back I’ll take it back to them
I’ll do a scan before I go away
