Anyone Own An Electric Scooter?

Good point cause the canal network is full of the old bill waiting to catch someone on an e scooter ;)
But believing you're unlikely to be caught isnt an excuse to break the law. Where we live near where the river Aire joins the Calder canal, police on trail bikes frequently patrol IWW paths for that very reason.

Honestly at most even if I was to bump into plod I would perhaps get a speaking to. Can't see me twaddling along on my silent scooter is going to bring the full force of the law down on me. Yes if on a loud trials/quad bike I'd expect all sorts of problems.

You can stand on a scooter but can't stand on the pedals? Also, it folds. It is also legal. ;)
you need to pedal ebike for the motor to kick in so would need to be seated. Have tried the folding bikes but I just can't fit on one.

A Police Officer patrolling a towpath will have certain objectives, one of them will be targeting people using scooters / mopeds etc on the towpaths.

If you meet one who shares the widely held view that canal towpaths are not a suitable place to use motorised transport, you'll almost certainly get done, there won't be a warning or chat.

Worst case you'll lose the scooter and get disqualified from driving for driving with no insurance. Big risk!

Not sure where all you guys live but clearly you have a much better police presence than in my town. Your crime rate must be extraordinary low :D

Apologies for resurrecting this old thread - it was the first one I found on the subject of electric scooters.

I'm currently in Italy and electric scooters are EVERYWHERE, being ridden erratically and recklessly by knobheads who are either too young or too irresponsible to drive/ ride a licenced vehicle. E-scooters are quiet and fast, and their use is uncontrolled, which is a recipe for danger - both to their users and to the public around them. Following a number of near misses where I've had to take evasive action, I can safely say that I hate e-scooters and, frankly, I hate the idiots who use them on the public highway, pavements, or anywhere else where they're likely to come into conflict with the public.

There! I've vented my spleen as per the curmudgeon I've become.

My only other comment relates to the attitude, expressed in this thread, that "the police are unlikely to catch me, so what's the harm?" Seriously? Are you making life choices based on such playground logic? What about other potential consequences, such as the possibility you might damage someone's property or injure someone (or worse). Do you want to be responsible for those and do you really think the police will be wanting to just give you a talking to?
