Auxiliary Belt Shredded! 8,000 miles???!!!

Well that's my second belt shredded, 3000 miles after the first one. That's two belts in 19500 miles. VW sadi there was nothing wrong with my van the first time. I'd like to hear them say that now!

I'll post up when I find out more. The vans on it's way to the dealers on a lorry tomorrow morning.

Sorry to hear about that; got to be more than very bad luck twice, surely???

Yeah, that can't be right! Good luck.

That reminds me, I need to get a spare before I go on my Alps trip in August.

Well I picked up my van from the dealers this morning. They replaced the power steering pump and pulley, belt tensioner and pulley. The job sheet also says there is no recall or known issue with belts shredding.

Hopefully that's my van sorted now and it doesn't happen again. I'm not sure its worth carrying a spare belt in my case. Access is so tight even on a ramp, not something that could be easily done at the roadside and if it does snap again I'd rather VW had to sort it.

The more I read the more I think these vans are not that reliable lol
There are a awful lot of them out there, it would be interesting to know percentage wise how many actually have problems compared to other brands!

Has anyone changed a Aux belt them selves? Has anyone got a step by step guide how to do this job.. thanks Paul

It’s very simple all you need is 16mm spanner and about 6mm drill bit, draw out your belt lay out for reference, on the tensioner there is a 16 mm nut head pull the tension off the belt with this poke the drill bit in th hole in the tensioner and it align with a second hole in the tensioner body this will hold the tensioner right off , remove the belt fit new belt using you drawing for reference, take the load off tensioner with spanner and remove drill bit

Thanks Niknak.. there seems to be a plastic cover over part belt of the belt pulleys is that easy to remove ?. I'm changing the belt cos it sounds like strangled budgie!!!! I can stop the noise with silicone spary temporarily..

From memory I can’t remember the plastic cover but would think it’s only going be a couple 10mm nuts or bolts

Hi,
Our auxiliary belt snapped on our van at 40,000 miles yesterday (excellent condition and recently serviced a few months back).
I didn’t hear any screeching and there was no burning smell. Mid journey on a very busy duel carriageway the steering just became heavy and the van starting to drag left and the battery light came on. Fully loaded van with an 8yr old and 3mth old, luckily police came quick to escort us to safer location to sort out recovery.
A mate came to look at it first thing this morning and suggested it could have been the aiecon pump that caused it to shred and suggested we could replace the belt bypassing the aircon pump to see if it runs fine (if so, then likely that was the cause). If it goes again having bypassed that, could then maybe be the alternator.
obviously we would be without aircon for a bit but if it solves the problem, then we know it’s that we need to get fixed?

Any other ideas??

fhanks in advance!

He also said everything else seemed to be turning and working fine so nothing obvious there that could have shredded it....

id just put a new belt on a roll with it . . . see what happens (if all the pulleys are rotating freely as your guy mentioned)

if the same thing happens then you have an issue . . . or you could get another 40ks happy driving?

yes that’s what we’re thinking as all the pullys/tensioners are rotating freely: change the belt and see how it goes...we are going to replace the timing belt as due anyway and hope that if the auxiliary does go again that at least this will be as strong as it can be and hopefully prevent more extensive damage!

Have you checked that the alternator free wheels as in the inbuilt clutching when these seize can cause the tensioner to bounce and shred belts

Well the alternator pully was free wheeling he said. He said he couldn’t see anything obvious that would have caused it to shred. We are contacting VW to ask if the auxiliary belt recall had been done too.
we will probably change the tensioner pully though to eliminate that issue if it is there!
