awning rails... magnetic or fixed?

View attachment 45385 View attachment 45384 Don’t get it .....it was a waste of time always keep falling off in the end at night I just took it off the first night... and the next day I just through the straps over the van from the awning over the van so it stayed up...
as you can see I have a pop top so the was not a 100% flat surface... I reckon if you don’t have a pop top it might hold it but the magnets are so weak I don’t think it would so you’re better off going for a rail which I’m doing
Hope this helps
Doug

Finger on the button to buy one - which make did you have as there are a few

Good advice I’ll look into that bud cheers. Any photos of your sailrail and awning rail please?
Thanks

Paul

Don't have any pic of the awning rail itself, but ours is a simple c channel which fits underneath the hilo roof so is hidden when it is down. If you can't/don't want to get a rail fitted under your roof then you can get one's that bonds onto the side of the van instead. Both options work well and have been used by loads of people on this forum.

Thanks for info and photo think I’ll go for the sail like you suggested and get the Reimo awning rail as looks decent quality and strong many thanks for advice.

@DOUG WARD Following this thread and see you have a Hex awning. I have just ordered one of these and it arrives Monday. I don't have time to get a rail fitted by next weekend and see you used the over vehicle straps. Did these come with the awning and do they foul the pop top.

Thanks,

Martin.

Yes the straps come with awning and you won’t be disappointed with the awning because it’s so easy to put up and down ... the straps work fine but a pain every time you go and come back if it’s raining ☔️......

Hi do you use magnets on the Awning trapping the material too so they hold to the roof ?
Yep, I roll the opening flap as you would if you were rolling it up normally then just tuck the magnets with the material into the roof channel. We used it for 4 days last weekend again, it works just fine, not as neat as a rail but I'm happy to forgo that for the absolute ease it allows me to come and go with the van. I can drive away or hook it back up in a couple of minutes, no need to be mm perfect setting it up.

Look for 'taxi plate magnets' they are rectangular have a rubber faced magnet with a metal back and a bolt on it, four work very well for me but I guess it depends on the size and weight of the awning you are using.

has Anyone tried this - I’m not sure how wind proof it would be but I like the simplicity of it.

Magnetic Drive Away kit

Back to my original post - I've tried the magnets including the taxi rubber ones and now - I've thrown the towel in, this week the Reimo awning rail gets fitted, no more straps over the top and mainly looking forward to hooking up the tent to the van and then inflating it rather than vice versa!

Case Closed for me.

Afternoon would anyone know if the magnetic awning strip can be used on a van with roof bars ! I don't want to be taking the roof bars of and fitting a rail incase I start getting leaks etc so a magnetic one is an option if it can be used with roof bars ! cheers

Hello @sportsman ,not sure about the magnetic strips but if you followed the instructions on here for the "leak free roof rail fitting" while fitting an awning rail under your rails then you would be fine, obviously if your preferred magnetic solution turns put to be no good

I’ve had exactly the same thoughts, I only want a very small awning but I haven’t found anything magnetic that’s strong enough to take even the mildest breeze.
I’m still considering the use of removable suction cups to secure the awning and a light magnetic strip to get some form of seal wIth the van body to prevent drips.
There are a huge variety of suction cups online, best of all they are not permanent. I’m trying to avoid nailing anymore stuff to the outside of the van.

Considering our awning was ripped from the figure-8 whilst we were out this morning, a magnetic one would be next to useless I would have thought.

Agh! Oh no! Is the awning itself ok or has it ripped the beading...is it your Bawdsey?

No problem, it was the Kampa trip air, no damage at all, used screw in pegs, so it was just the constant tugging that worked the plastic along enough for the Kador to pull out of the end and then once it started it carried on.
