This is gonna be a long one so buckle yourself in.
I’m new to the transporter lifestyle. I’ve always wanted one and I managed to buy myself a 6.1, T 32, CXEC biTDI, LWB, DSG, LEDs used for £26k last month from a VW franchise in the UK. I have been looking for a long time for a Van and when this one came up, I thought it’s perfect. It has done 60,000 miles but that doesn’t phase me as it’s come from a VW garage with warranty. When I bought the van, I took out the maximum amount of extended warranty and when three years is up I will extend it for another three years as I’m self-employed and I need my van for my job.
To tell you a bit about myself, I used to work for VW as a diagnostic technician on passenger vehicle around 6 years ago so I know how VW operate and what the used multi point check consists of.
When I was in the sales office, I mentioned that I worked for VW and I also mentioned that I have a friend that is a technical trainer for VW and that he did a in-depth background check on my van and will be checking all the work that been carried out on it. Hoping that they would do the right job the first time and that they can’t pull the wool over my eyes, as I know what they’re like.
The van was delivered to me and I did my own inspection of the van on the floor as I don’t have access to a ramp. I found that the front nearside shock absorber was covered in oil that the rear centre brake light was broken and a host of other issues. They agreed to pick up the van and leave me a courtesy vehicle. They fixed the issues and said they’ll do a thorough check on the vehicle again as they might have missed things on the first multi point check they did. But reported no other issues found.
Then, when receiving the van back I’ve started to notice that the Dual mass flywheel is knocking badly and that the DSG gear box isn’t smooth when changing gears. They’re going to change the flywheel first then road test and see if that clears up the DSG issue. If not then new DSG box.
So now the van is back in the VW garage for the 3rd round. This time it’s got the master Tech checking the vehicle over and he has found another huge list of smaller errors including when they changed the shock absorbers they left off the bump stops off and dust seals.
It’s hard as a technician you get trained to manufacturer specification and then your franchise wants you to hit these stupid targets otherwise you and they won’t earn any money.
I used to do this as a job so I have no problem finding issues with the van, the reason I left is I couldn’t cut corners. I had to do a proper job but the franchise deemed me not efficient.
it annoys me that they operate like this as the majority of customers would have no idea.
You can have it right,
You can have it now,
But you can’t have it right now
