Bar-Tek DSG Temperature Monitor

I've been looking for DSG coolers, as I use the van for towing, and sometimes feel the DSG getting 'notchy' with a heavy trailer and right foot. Whilst surfing for such, I came across Bar-Tek Motorsport and their DSG temperature monitor;

Cheaper than the Revo bare ally filter housing. I also love blue LEDs.

Best we check the actually temperature before buying a cooler. Beware, that website has pages of tempting stuff....

It turned up, very well machined housing, which is also available without the temperature sender to replace the OEM one.

It does get a bit hot round by the DSG filter, so wrapped the lead in heat resistant material.

Ran the cable in and stuck the display on.

Now I just need to do some high speed towing to see if it is getting hot....

Interested to know dsg oil temps in heavy traffic with a 2 tonne load on the back. We'll not that interested that I'll plug in VCDS but please let me know.

Like you I notice after long hauls during traffic it is jerky. My t5.1 did the same so I assume oil coefficients are different at very high temps.

Leads on to engine oil temps. Highest I have seen on MFD is 136 degrees.

Something between a dedicated permanent display and VCDS - an app running on cell phone (Android and/or iOS) approach - wireless & Carista dongle - was introduced here:

I have carista and OBD11 so could use either of them but clearly I'm not that interested. The DQ500 is definitely jerky at high temps even without a trailer. I noticed it stuck in traffic for hours in Budapest. Outside temps at 40 degrees and AC on full would have added heatsoak to the box.

Out of interest is the filter housing easier or harder to get out of the tiny space above the box? I've done a few filter changes and it's pretty awkward with the rounded end plastic VW one.

There is a ‘gearbox overheat - stop engine immediately’ warning. I have had it once reversing my caravan up the driveway!

I only use the motormover for reversing since having a DSG. It really doesn't like backwards, underload so can understand the overheat warning. Wife's Peugeot gets the same towing forward in traffic. Not much you can do about that, tin snail owners are already hated enough without holding everyone up for a gearbox cool off.

Well.... There's probably a part 2 coming. I've just done that.

Thanks for the pointer, this looks very sweet!

Especially, supporting 6 additional sensors sounds fab - would love to add oil pressure and maybe something else.

I understand the device itself it adaptable for almost anything but I find this quote little bit ambiguous - are the customers able to customize the controllers fully to their needs?

The control unit manufacturers themselves determine which values are sent via the CAN bus interface. Documentation is important here - possibly even in the form of a DBC file that can be imported via the MFD15 Gen2 Display Setup Software.

You can also access the extensive list of already implemented controllers. These can be found in the download area . A total of up to 64 sensors can be queried if the manufacturer supports this.

Definitely worth investigating little bit more.

Some of the displays on the Can Checked gauge.

Done nothing but connect to the Drivetrain CAN bus so far. Need to catch up on the day job rather than dick with my van for hours.

Interesting to see how early lots of boost comes on on the Bi-Turbo engines.

IAT interesting to see how much heat soak there is in traffic.

The flexibility is very good, each screen can be edited/deleted, or custom readings added as bar graph, display or dial.

Wil report more when I've had a chance to go through all of the menus.
