Brake Upgrade

This thread is getting silly over some brakes for sale. Do you need bigger brakes not really. The ones VW put on your van do the job nicely as that is what they are designed to do. They could be improved yes because from the look of the one for sale they are swing callipers so a two pot brake would be an improvement but the bigger you go the more chance of locking up unless you are upping the BHP as well. Face it the 204 brakes are as big as most people will need. My mate with the six pots is going to a lot of effort but that is what he does. He puts a lot of effort into all is cars, the T5 is his latest joy.
VanBlanc's mini might have has STD brakes but mine were 4pot vents and stopped the car which is what you need to do safely and if the worst came to the worst you could throw it sideways to scrub off the speed some how I doubt you could with a van. Changing things on any car or van has consequences you have to sit down and think it through first before doing it and if you don't know what you are doing leave it for some one who does you could kill yourself or worse some one else

Speedwell or Speedwell of Chesham as it was known in 1972 when I worked there was I believe a branch from that original. Hill was the chairman and I recall him visiting occasionally with his son Damon in tow. Somewhere in the loft I have the personally autographed picture he handed out at the works Christmas do.

By then they were more into chrome wheel nut covers and the like that we shipped all over the world. There still was a workshop and with some very clever guys. The 2 top guys left and started their own tuning shop in Slough where they were doing contract builds for the likes of Sir John Williams and Frank Williams and building batches of formula Ford engines for the USA. I had temporary job with them tearing down the DFVs that Fitipaldi had over revved the week before. The business went on successfully for a lot of years especially in the the classic market until the remaining owner passed away a few years ago.

I always remember the amount of interesting gash stock we had on the shelves. I got hold of an F3 crank for my 105E and there was loads of genuine Empi stuff that no one wanted! There were probably some brake upgrades in there too :D
