Not my first VW, but definitely my first Van. Hi everyone, I am hoping to mine valuable knowledge from the hive mind here on how to buy the important essentials (or build) as cheap as possible. I am broke after buying the van, so very limited funds for at least 6 - 12 months.

Howdy JumpShip.
I suppose the first thing I'm seeking advice on is how to have a bed & seating area. I've been looking at building a sliding jobby. The bought ones are very expensive especially with the foam cushions. I'll be in it alone most of the time, but I'd like to be able to have room for another (just in case my van becomes a babe magnet)

Lovely lookin van WO0! welcome to the forum!

Costs are the main hurdle. In my opinion budget builds are the long game and I am still in the initial stages. Rock'n'roll beds are quite pricey if you want a crash test/MOT compliant version.

My mark 1 (bed) version is 2 sheets of 8x4 3/4in Ply and a 4x4. cost about £100 including hinges and screws and is very rough and ready. It was a rush job as I needed to get away with the wife for a weekend, it makes a 5' platform with a fold up extension to make it into a bed avec double air bed etc. The amazing @roooms gave me his plans for this and if I'd done it right it'd a been perfect hehe

I have a plan to dismantle it and create a U shaped set up. foam seat cushions/matress is obvs additional money (£200/£300 potentially for foam) unless you have an old memory foam matress you can cut up and upholster. Also I want some chunky slide out drawers so there's a cost there too.

There's also the below none belted option - the guy who builds it is awesome

They're always gonna charge a premium for the upholstered crash tested R'n'R beds and buying the cheapest on eBay whilst tempting would leave me feeling uneasy I think. You have a long road ahead (no pun intended) and it's gonna be a laugh. Lookin forward to your build updates

Howdy & nice wheels. Is your bed a fixed build? Do you think @roooms would fire his info over to me & I'll see if it works?
It's currently a fixed build but the storage is pretty substantial. As I said, it's the mark 1 hehe

If you click on the text section of the below it will take you to the cut list if you scroll down a bit

I like what he's done there in the vid , i built something similar for ours and it works really well .
Helps a lot with costs if you have kit and are able to build it yourself .
