Cambelt + Water Pump Replacement - Official guidance

To be clear, VW does not recommend the 4 year change. The private company that represents VW in the UK has decided to jettison the VW recommendation of 210,000km and eliminate the recommended belt inspection that is included in standard service in Europe, in order to create a cash cow which is an outlier in all of VW’s markets.
They had to, the revenue from changing brake fluid every two years wasn't even enough to cover the christmas bonus!!

Phoned local dealer to check against any recalls etc on my '16 plate EU5 T6, 102 5 spd. No recalls on mine except an ECU change which they did for me in 2018 (which significantly improved fuel economy I remember, or at least made the displayed economy fit actual fuel usage). I asked about belt and water pump and was told 4 years/125,000 Km. £433 all in to change just the belt, but they don't automatically advise the pump change at the same time as the two aren't near each other on mine (AAB engine apparently) £576 for water pump, so £1K to have both done......

Not sure if I'm reading that right. Water pump isn't near what? It runs off the timing belt.
I not long had my belt and pump done all OEM equipment including aux belt for under £450....that was an independent garage but even from a dealer it shouldn't be more than £700 all in.
1k is rediculous.

Yeah, that's why I'm posting really. I can understand that there'll be less additional work to do the pump on some engines, but it's driven by the belt being replaced.
Was never thinking of using them for the work, just wanted a price so I'd have a good idea of what local independent will charge (50-60% of VW usually).
I've been trying to find out about the AAB engine, but anything I've found suggests it's a T4 engine.

EDIT - it's a CAAB engine

That’s the issue with talking with a Service Manager and not the Mechanic, all waffle, free coffee and crocodile smiles. One more year with VW for warranty purposes and never again.

The fella that does mine is an independent garage, been around for years and also runs a small rental van fleet. He's both a farmer and a privateer rally driver, and I trust him totally. Nothing worse than walking out of a garage wondering what's been done and whether you've been had.

So i'm picking my conversion up on Saturday.2016 T32,T6,150 BHP.Its done 75k.Do you think it's best to get the water pump and belt changed asap?Asked the converter and they won't do that untill it reaches 4 years(which is October)I know a really good indy garage that i have used for years.

Well I wouldn't worry too much that it's going to fall apart in the next few weeks as the UK time period is so conservative. However book it in at your convenience over the next month or so, most people are keeping to the 4 year intervals.

Have to do mine in the next couple weeks all genuine parts from TPS for under £200 just a bit of time to do, the electric water pump confusion it is a toothed pulley driven by the cambelt but the impeller has a electrically controlled cover to open and shut the flow of water around the engine, and yes they do fail see a lot stuck halfway or tilted

Hi, Does anyone have a guide for the replacement of the Cambelt and Water pump on a 2017 BiTurbo?
I guess you couldn’t face reading all seven pages, I don’t blame you :)
link to the post I put up after contacting the manufacturer.

Thanks Loz,

Just to add my experience to this thread. I live in Italy. Mine is T6 150CV DSG registered in 04/2017 passenger version. Engine CXFA.
I call VW service delear and confirmed my van was not affected from this problem.
They told me that the camblet service is schedule after 10 years or 200.000 Km....

Here I read 5 years.... May be in Italy we have different service schedule? Or different cambelt materials?
I have spoken to VW here in Spain and they check the frame number and told me 8 years or 200 000km. When I look in foruns, google or asking friends, the answer is "Just be safe and change it at 80 000km or 4 years, whatever comes first".. Should I not trust the VW?, what's going on..

Been four years for a really long time on vag belts
they probably don’t want to do it

Edited to keep thread on track.

UK is the only outlier, because the private company which represents VW in the UK has ditched both VW recommendations and the recommendation of the belt manufacturer in order to make some quick cash. They also save by not having to do the regular belt inspections which are included in regular service everywhere else. Since all the info is in this thread, you might want to have a read.

I'm in Spain and just had an official inspection service at 6 years and 88,000 km. Belt inspection was included in the service.

I might be beast I’m quite happy changing my belt every four years cause it’ll only be me having to rebuild the engine if it goes, done a Tiguan privately start if the year that was five years old and had jumped the belt so I’m eyes preventative maintenance is fine by me

I wont be changing my belt at four years.

Its ridiculous that its only the UK that has such short replacement times.

I'll be sticking to the belt and manufacturer's schedule.

Its mental to change a cambelt at 16,000 miles.

Each to their own everyone’s entitled to their opinion, but don’t forget what a cambelt is constructed from and that it’s subject to climatical change and is set out by manufacturers regarding this to some manufacturers for example Volvo even run different cambelt tensions based on climate temperatures

I know from another thread that your background and experience is relevant, but why is it that countries with climatic conditions very similar to ours recommend a belt change every five years? And why with all the advances in materials and manufacturing are cambelt changes recommended more frequently than they were decades ago? It smells very much like profiteering to me!
