Cambelt + Water Pump Replacement - Official guidance

Loz, you’re right. The solenoid gets swapped over to the new pump to prevent an error message, it’s blanked off on the new pump.

I don’t think it will as it’s a output to a solenoid, I will try disconnecting one at work when get a chance, the problem I would say is then your going to have a live plug with no termination
Normally all devices and sensors controlled by a module, check for open and short circuit. It may not throw up a light but may show and fault when scanned?

Be interesting to see the difference if any with these pumps, in potential warm up time from cold, the pump should be ok as used to fit gates ones on a lot of the Vag range when they had impeller problems as gates had metal ones at that time, those shielded pumps are a pain in the arse I don’t think I’ve taken one out yet that isn’t sat on the piss or stuck half way

Just completed my cambelt and water pump today. Lucky as I thought the noise I had was from the alternator bearing but now I've done the complete cambelt, its silent.
I went with the gates kit like above and swapped the water pump out from the solenoid version to the none solenoid. Oddly every thing showed I would not have the solenoid version but I did.
1 less thing to go wrong I guess.
All works ok and no eml on dash. I will plug laptop in tomorrow and have a look see what it says.

Have you got a link to the kit you used.
Thanks

Awesome! Thanks for that, I’m looking to do mine over winter.

I just found out our cambelt and water pump is due, 26k miles covered but the van is 4 years old.

I was told I need the brake fluid an a/c done as it wasn’t done at its last inspection (but thats a story for another day....)

So all in £874 Inc vat! FML only phoned up for a service!

Thanks, I think I got a few pages in and saw that 4yrs seemed about right. It was just a bit of a shock at the cost. Sat there smug thinking I’ve got 1 more free service, then pow!

We’ve got a good independent VW garage near by, might see how much they want for the cam belt and pump the morning.

Missus just said the cat warning light came on too today! Grrrrr

Think of it as getting paid about 500 quid to read the rest of the thread. @Loz even got in touch with the manufacturer of the belt, and VW service schedules from Germany, France, Belgium and Spain are quoted. The UK recommendation, which is the only outlier, comes from the private UK importer, VW UKCV, not the manufacturer of the van or the belt. The result is that money is being made by throwing out perfectly good parts in order to make some quick cash. VW UKCV has written to forum members who have questioned this, telling them that the basis for that recommendation. "is not available to be shared."

You don't have to go all the way back. Start here:

Thanks, read it all the way through now. I’ve got the van booked in for the service but think I’ll hold off a little while longer on the belt, still gonna get a price from the independent chaps though

Best thing so far I’ve paid for was this .liked the van but realised how much better it could be with new cam belt water pump etc once I had new fitted

It all goes unnoticed I think, again it’s important to do these belts to keep the timing spot on

Please elaborate.
This seems a bit like saying how much better the van is, now that you have washed off the mud from inside the wheel arches :)

The timing must have been out .. it was stalling easily if not in exactly in the correct gear .. if I slowed down too much at a roundabout for example .. like there was a missing gear ... after the cam belt was done I could go slow in third gear easily .. I had never driven a t6 before so didn’t realise how bad mine was until this job was done ... and of course the water pump had also started leaking ..
