85k or 4yrs .... whatever's first

I'm confused! o_O On other threads on this forum, it has been quoted as 4 years or 120,000 miles. The 'Service_scedule_additional.pdf' hosted on this forum quotes (ignoring the lower "Dusty" regions figure) a distance of 210,000 km which equates to 130,000 miles.

Am I missing something? Which is right? ;)

I don't disagree this is a standard figure but the official VW figure is 210,000 km and we should also be consistent with advice on this forum......

the 2016 vw transporter maint book as @Loz pointed out states:

.

200k would be 124k miles ish.

ill edit the previous post so its inline with the above,

120,000 miles is the figure I have always had for the T6.

So the question is......do you need to do it at 80/85,000? (assuming you have inspected it and it looks OK). I am sure repair dealers would like you to.

this book dated 09: 2018:

so its listed as regular checks . . . . .

and to replace on or before 120k miles . . . .

but no year/age listed....

yet other sources state 4 years . . . . .

so lets say it needs checking regular at service intervals

it needs changing at 120k miles or 4years what ever is first . . .

the waterpump is always listed as an option to be replaced at the same time.

so 85k may be a bit soon - but remeber its an interfereabce engine, so if it lets go its gonna do damage

Cam Belt Change?

.

Make sure they change your aux belt at the same time. It only costs about £20 but if it snaps it can easily take out the cambelt. Hardly any garages seem to do this.

So the question is: if your van, like mine, has less than 20 thousand miles on at 4 years, does the waterpump need to be changed?.

I completely understand why it is recommended that the pump be changed whilst you're in there having the belt changed, but wonder if this is more aimed at a more normal, longer cambelt change interval as you find with many other manufacturers.
Even at 8 years of my ownership, when the cambelt is changed for its 2nd time, the waterpump will still have only done 40 thousand miles. (assuming it is not done at the first cambelt change).

I absolutely agree with changing the aux belt regularly as someone who had a car thats aux belt broke and took the cambelt with it, totalling it.

Ok now had email back from VW who say 4 years for cambelt, but that all VW's made after 2009 are 5 years for cambelt, so have spoken to VW and after some time was told that the reason for 4 years is not really the cambelt that needs changing but the Water pump which may leak.

100% it’s 4 years for the change. Get the full kit changed including tensioners etc

If you're local to is we do this as a wile you wait job using genuine parts.

I will need this done on my van in about 6 months, can you let me know a guide price pls?

Vw van centres are giving me prices from £549 to £700 plus vat for Cambelt water kit fitted.
I will have it done soon at 4 years using my local Vw Audi centre who are all ex VW techs using all genuine parts for £560 inclusive. Plus £295 inclusive for major service again all genuine parts. All done to VW spec with 2 years on all parts.

Just for peace of mind I had my cam belt, auxiliary belt, water pump and pulleys changed on Wednesday this week.
I have a 2016 (Euro 5) 140 LWB Kombi and with 100622 miles it was certainly within the window of pessimism.
Both belts and all pulleys in excellent condition with the only sign of age or wear being slight noise when spinning the two smallest diameter idler pulleys.

The T6 cambelt / water pump interval specified by VW seems very short.
My 2001 A4 has well over 200K miles on the clock, now on its third cambelt and second water pump, no issues at all with reliability.

Are you referring to the calendar based schedule for the T6? Even so, assuming it is 5 years, it would still be on its third belt if it was built in 2001.
The usage interval is 200 000 km or 124 300 miles.

A 2001 vehicle with 5 year schedule would be due its 5th cam belt next year, 2021.

Yes. My brain suggested I was wrong but I went ahead anyway!
3 changes, but 4 belts. 5th in 2021....
