Disconcerting battery issue

A few times in recent weeks the battery in my 2016 T6 has appeared to be dead when I turn the key to start.
After a moment the starter kicks in very slowly, as if it is struggling without any charge in the battery.
After what seems an age the engine finally chugs into life.
Sometimes all is then well.
On one occassion the engine management system limited me to 3,000 rpm. On other occasions the clock has reverted to 0000 and all trip data has been lost. Radio tuning not impacted.
Any clues greatly received.
I can find no obvious drains on the battery.

Sound like Battery on it’s way out..have you checked the battery status on different occasions to show its health state ...but if it was a moll battery try the dealers

Batttery is a Varta 7P0 915 105.
Might be the original. No idea. Only had the van a couple of months.

Have just checked charge level. Sitting somewhere between 11.5 and 12 apparently.
If it is time for a new one, what is the recommendation. I don't have a leisure battery, yet. On the to do list. But only running a few extra LED lights at the moment.

Not an answer to your problem but for a few quid get one of these, it’s shows you both the battery voltage when stopped and also the voltage going in when you are driving.
might give you a clue what’s going on?

New Hankook AGM 58020 80Ah 800A battery purchased and fitted. Fingers crossed that is the end of my battery woes.
Slightly longer than the OEM Varta that it replaces. As a result the padded jacket no longer fits. I assume that this is not going to be a problem though.

Don’t forget you need to get your new battery coded to the van

Thank you for the information Deaky.
I wasn't aware that I had to get the battery coded to the van!
What does this mean and how do I do this?
I don't recall seeing anything about this in the manual.
I simply took out dead battery and replaced it with a new one. How foolish to think that it was that simple. Seemed easy enough and van now working again.

You need VCDS to do it. The van needs to know the capacity and vendor, used in calculations regarding the smart alternator and stop start. It's detailed in @mmi post below

Thank you for confirmation of what is required..
Assume that I need to go to a VW garage to get a VCDS update undertaken.

Yes, unless there is another forum member close by who can do it for you. Look out for users with the yellow VCDS badge under their avatar.
