DVLA and reclassifying a converted campervan

Oh ye of little faith, new V5 received yesterday all good and within 10 days.
Nice - I might consider taking this route, but the whole idea of "motor caravan graphics" fills me with horror. How did you get round this ( I don't mind something temporary that (ahem) unfortunately falls off the first time it rains but just after I take some photos.)

Is it the ‘D5 Body Type’ part on the V5 you get changed (mine says Motor Caravan already) but the taxation class says ‘Light Goods Vehicle’.

Photos it would seem are important both exterior and interior re the decals my a Leisuredrive conversion (photo) I sent in 8 photos altogether and also of importance a chassis number photo on mine it's on the driver side B pillar.

This is interesting - vans like yours were getting rejected continuously, maybe all the complaints to/at DVLA have borne fruit at last. My high top was "motor caravanned" in December 2018 but by April 2019 they were getting rejected totally. I know that the industry complained loudly and people contacted their Members of Parliament so they may have relaxed their blanket block.

I thought it was mainly rejections for vans with poptops or tin tops that were the problem , hightops have still been getting through .

Hi tops have been getting knocked back. Vans that tick every single box on the sheet have been getting knocked back without explanation.

Until now, it would seem.

It's possible as OBG reckons, that the backlash this has caused has finally had someone in authority kick the DVLA into touch, but we won't know for sure until they're consistently being accepted.

There are examples of hi tops being knocked back and when people have complained they've been told it wasn't high enough! Presumably they were lower profile tops, but there was nothing on the checklist mandating a minimum height.

Perhaps there has been an outbreak of common sense at the DVLA?

I've always been of the opinion that the DVLA acted beyond their statutory powers when they changed the reclassification rules.

In conjunction with the police, they came up with some claptrap about "Body Type must reflect a vehicle's external appearance", which was (is) obviously BS as we now have a situation where a Cali is classified as a Motor Caravan, but a VISIBLY IDENTICAL converted van is classified as a Van with Windows. Besides which, in changing the rules, they effectively contradicted the legal definition of a Motor Caravan.

Has any one tried to challenge the DVLA ?- this has to be according to a set of rules - the form that you need to fill in seems to be reasonably specific. Freedom of information request?
