EGR Front Pipe - Replace ???

Hi All,

Any advice appreciated. Please see 2 attached photos. These are of the top of the EGR front pipe of my 2018 36k mile T6.

I cleaned the area prior to a 500 mile journey after noticing a small amount of dark, tar like build up on this joint that's been there I'm pretty sure since I bought the van on March 2023.
The pictures are of the deposit after the journey. I'm not losing any coolant and I'm not noticing anything untoward with performance or MPG.

The rear pipe is fine but I believe is of the older design.

My question is should I get this looked at and replaced and have the rear one done at the same time with the newer design of pipe? I have a 3 year warranty with my van and I'm hopeful they'd cover most of the costs but please answer assuming that I'll be forking out and I which case what am I looking at in terms of £££.

Many Thanks

Radar

Have had a quote from my local VW specialist to replace both pipes. They have quoted £510.50 all in.

Does this seem reasonable (assuming they are using genuine VW parts - will check) or should I get a quote direct from VW ???

well,,,

long one is about £35 from a 3rd party

and short about £165..
from a 3rd party

+++++++++++

and takes less than an hour to do.

say £100 labour. . .

++++++++++

id expect,

165 + 35 + 100 = 300 odd.?

so maybe call a local VW Indy and get a second quote . . .

edit:

Soz just re-read.

yes, i would also get a price from local VW van center, they soulf be able to give you a pro-forma quote via email etc.

plus id also get a price from another indy. . .

got mine done under the Extended warrenty on one van and under the ALL-IN on the other van,

That doesn’t look like a problem at the moment, that’s a very small residue of whatever has burnt off. If it’s leaking the area would be covered with soot, that looks more like a lubricant.

I'll agree its more liquid than gassy soot.

Given where it is the only source can be the pipe. Nothing can drip onto it from above and the entire area around it in the engine bay is dry as a bone so I'm stumped if it isn't an issue with the pipe.

I've sent the photo and details to 2 local garages. One is the £510 German marque specialist who simply quoted replacements and the other is the local VW approved commercial vehicle centre. I'm currently waiting to hear back from them.

The warranty company have washed their hands of me as they don't cover pipes. Another reason to hate where I bought the van from but that's another long, long, bitter story best left alone. So I'm left trying to get the work done as economically as possible.

With the genuine parts being around £200 inc VAT I'm happy with costs of £300-400 for peace of mind and guaranteed work. Its seems silly really as its only 8 Torx bolts and I suspect I could attempt it myself. That said if something went wrong or I sheared a bolt it's a world of pain for me to get out of.

I'll see what the other garage quotes, then weep profusely for a while and stump up to get it fixed I guess.

id have to agree. . .

when they fail, they split.

so you get exhaust fumes around the engine bay, hissing sound from the pipe and soot deposit next to the split.

those pics don't seem to show those symptoms.

I really have no idea what it is then or where it's coming from.

Nothing can drip or fall onto that area of the pipe and like I say everything else around it is dry.

if it doesn't stink of fumes,?

or hissing,?

or covered in soot.?

then don't worry about it, and spend your hard earned £500 on something better.

I’ve now had 2 quotes but no one has completely confirmed the issue. Just quoted to replace both EGR pipes.
I’m struggling to get anywhere with diagnosis and I’m laid up with COVID which sucks.
My local specialist, as I’ve stated, wants £500, though I’ve gone back to them to see if they can cut me a better deal. The local VW Commercial Van Centre wants £720. FFS.
There is definitely a yellow sticky ‘liquid’ coming from around this pipe. It simply can’t be from anywhere else.
Does anyone have the slightest idea or suggestion as to what it might be and also does anyone know of a garage in the Cheltenham area I could get another quote from ?
I’m getting tempted to do at least the front pipe myself. If it’s only 4 bolts then surely it’s straight forward.
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you are desperate to spend some money. I don’t see a defect, just a deposit that isn’t causing any harm.

I’m certainly not desperate to spend my money. Quite to opposite.
But what I see is something that shouldn’t be happening and something that for all I know hides an underlying problem or will cause catastrophic costs later on if I don’t get it addressed now.
I’d rather not have a failure when I’m out and about.
I was assuming I wasn’t alone in having this problem and that someone might know what it was from the photos. Especially as it’s so specific.
If only exhaust gas should be in that pipe then what could possibly be causing this sticky fluid to appear. If it’s lubricant / oil how can it be getting into the EGR system and if it is, from where.
I’m just trying to understand my van, given very little knowledge or experience, so I can make a choice about what I do.
I’m new to all this and spent a small fortune of some money I inherited from my mum on the van hoping to enjoy it.
I was reaching out to the community that’s helped me before hoping someone would know what’s what. I certainly wasn’t looking to waste peoples time.
Thanks for all your comments and time.

Depending which model T6 you have, replacing the rear EGR pipe is either an easy 10 minute job done from above, or an absolute b*****d of a job done from below, blind, taking hours.

If it's not broke, it may break at some point but that's not guaranteed and it may well be an absolute pain to replace. So I wouldn't worry unless it's an actual problem.
