Electric problems after driving through water

Thanks both, will get the Carissa, even after a day when I took the cowling off water poured out so I’m really hoping it drys out and clears, will look at AA home start, tbh a 20 plate is classed as new to me so thought I wouldn’t need it for a while!!

Also, strictly speaking, AA won't cover for issues that have already happened otherwise everyone would only join when they broke down...

Keep in mind the other advantage of any cover the provides VW Assist is they can often get you booked in to have things fixed quicker than you could book with the dealer direct.

Keep chasing the water, if it's got where it shouldn't be the longer it sits there the more damage it can do.

Will do, I’ve already done 20k in it since May when I bought it so it will be on over 100k by summer so will get decent breakdown cover, I’m wondering if it’s worth getting penetrating spray or something similar as it’s outside so could do with a bright sunny day or trying to dry it out somehow

Hi all, I’ve just joined the forum as tonight I’ve driven my T6.1 combi through water and lost my power steering and hill, headlight, front assist and sign display!
I’m happy to pay for premium but is the T6.1 fuse board list available as I’ve found a T6 one but I’m hoping that’s different as fuses 17/18 are ok
T6 has hydraulic power steering whereas T6.1 is electric, so there’ll be some differences. Not sure what though!

I’m wondering if it’s worth getting penetrating spray or something similar
I'm sure people have had success using a general purpose penetratrating oil on electrical circuits but the residue can create problems down the line.
I would recommend using a dedicated contact cleaner which serves a similar purpose in this situation but does not leave residue.

Thanks, will get it sorted today

Worth remembering that the WD in WD40 stands for Water Dispersant - originally used for keeping damp out of missile electronics rather than being a lubricant. Should be noted though that at the time not much plastics were around and it can damage some seals.

Ideally disassemble any suspect connection and use contact cleaner to blow out and replace any water and then it will evaporate off.

Hi all, got my Carista today and here’s the outcome, it all seems to be centred around two items, tried to reset but all 30 faults came straight back in, it’s going to a local garage that can diagnose further so really hoping it’s nothing major but feel it’s not looking great tbh, I did notice the voltage was slightly under 12v so was wondering if this could stop modules working?

Are they a VW specialist Steve?

I would agree, you can ignore anything that says missing message or function restriction as they imply issues with another module/system handing down an error response so its highly likely you have water or wiring short in or around the power steering module, lets hope they can access and repair

Although I would expect more voltage faults, is the van charging? Just wondering if maybe the alternator has took a soaking

It seems to be as I drove 20 miles turned it off for 30mins then drove 5 miles home and it’s been parked since Tuesday I’ve just been pulling it forward to get my tools, it’s starting first time with no struggles, it’s the original battery so is probably due to be changed

Get yourself a Bosch S5 A13 when the time is right, it's the biggest battery that will fit. You can code it yourself now with that Carista! Fingers crossed for an easy repair!

I’ve been chasing Listers VW in Coventry for my service history since I bought the van in May, have only got the services from when I bought it at 67k it’s now on 86k so next month it’s 4 years old so thinking I will get DSG service, timing belt and water pump done and new battery and it’s due an oil service now I will do once it’s running again hopefully.
What needs coding on the battery? Is it to tell the van it’s been replaced?

Yes it just lets the van know a new battery has been installed
The van monitors battery state of charge so when you tell it a new ones been fitted it just resets the charging regime, it will still work fine without any programming its just the correct way of doing it !

Where are you measuring that 12v from?

If it's an accurate 12.0v then that's around 50% charged and the point where charging is advised.

I doubt battery voltage alone is your root cause, but low charge, or a tired battery that dips low on starting, can cause issues.
