Essential Work And Corona Virus.

I,m also having to go in to work as I drive freight trains. And also work in a rail terminal.i ve never really thought of my job as being a essential key join any shape or form it's just my job. The sad thing is I really like my job. Sad but true. Plus the journey home usually take 45 minutes now it more like 20 minutes so some people in Glasgow / Renfrewshire area are taken in seriously. At the end of the day who wants to die. Nobody!!! The weather up here has been surprisingly very sunny. Makes a change. Stay safe and stay fit and healthy gang.

I stopped working after Monday last week and couldn't believe how quiet the roads were too.

Same here, electrician, small business owner so can't claim either of the government offerings. I have mortgage etc but feel it is necessary to stay at home and batten down the hatches not just for me and my familys sake but the people I would potentially come into contact with. I have very little money to fall back on, it's not going to be easy, my partner is in the same position as me. Unnecessarily going to work Will put more lives at risk.
I work for a company that are refusing to close even though the 2 meter rule is impossible to maintain in the workplace.
Ironically its a chinese owned company and the orders are coming down from the top....
Their recent statement reads ' Because Covid-19 is a global problem anyone who has returned from overseas travel recently should return immediately back to work, as it is no more of a risk than going to a local supermarket'
I had to read it twice to try and comprehend the logic...
Up to 100,000 people an hour go through an airport terminal... My local supermarket wasn't that busy even with the chaos of the loo roll panic buyers..!!
A few people here have just returned from New York . They asked the HR department regarding isolation period suggested by the Government... There response was 'the government has got it wrong, you should return straight to work..'
They're playing with peoples health just for profit gain... W**K**S !!

Similar here, my major contract is electrical compliance & testing on Priory Healthcare sites, and they're all in lockdown apart from emergency works. I also carry out work for McCarthy & Stone at their retirement home properties, again all in lockdown.
I have some other small works, but as my daughter has been sent home due to her asthma and is "at risk" and my wife is a key worker in the NHS ppe supply chain but is currently working from home, do I go to work and potentially bring the virus back with me?
We also haven't much in the bank to back us up due to me being off due to health issues earlier this year.
Yeah I use a blue inhaler every now and again. But recently I haven't had to use it at all.. I do have to keep it with me. Seen a few vw t6 ambulances out in force today on the way home from work aswell as a few t6 police vans.
I’d say stay home and try to ride it out.

@mopardave they were cutting the grass and trimming hedges in the church graveyard opposite where I was working last week, so based on that I’d assume us mere mortals are ok, that aside I did think it could easily have been classed as non essential but equally it couldn’t have been done from home either!
I work in civils and we are still renewing water mains but I think our work we will be put on stop soon, perhaps by Easter. The government have been very vague with their guidance for work when it can’t be done from home and really need to provide more clarity like they have with what shops can open...

I made the decision to close at lunchtime on Thursday last week, we are classed as key workers as we provide machined products that go to the NHS. We received an order on Friday from the NHS so I am opening up tomorrow for 2 days with minimum staff to complete their order then we will close again

Currently work in domestic properties fixing boilers. Only PPE we have is gloves. Customers are asked on phone if anyone is isolating or shielding. Pretty sure company are required by law to provide appropriate PPE, but they can't get any. I can refuse to work but wont get paid. Absolute joke.
@Jay , what PPE would you need? If the occupiers are not in the room with you, what is the risk?
Seriously, don't want to offend, but look up the WHO guidelines. Washing hands when entering and leaving, keeping distance from occupiers, should be sufficient. It's not like Tesco, where the checkout staff have a stream of strangers in front of them.
Edited to say: sorry, don't mean to sound callous. There is a lot of fear, understandable of course. No-one would willingly subject themselves to a 1% chance of dying. But you are providing an essential service, just as the supermarket workers are doing. Have a proper research, re-assure yourself, and take sensible precautions. Forewarned is forearmed, or something like that!

The figure that rams home the seriousness of this for me, is the number of doctors that have died. At time of writing, last I heard its 2 in the UK but 46!!!!!! in Italy. No mention of how many nurses though.

Hmmmm....so what I'm getting from the replies here is that it's pretty much a judgement call. The guidance isn't that clear to me.....the thought of being shamed in social media etc is horrific to me. So far, I've acted in the national interest and not mopardave's interest.....but some would say that the national interest is to keep going where safe to do so....after all, the world has to keep turning. It's clearer in Scotland....they've actually said window cleaners and gardeners can keep working. My daughter is a paediatric doctor in Australia.....she says I should be okay to work but I'm really torn by all this. It almost feels like choosing between going on strike or not going on strike! Thanks gents.....and whatever you do, stay safe. 
I’m sorry but this is wrong, I understand the worry about what people say on Facebook etc but Facebook et al is full of SHIT! Facebook and Twitter are places where people who have no right to have an opinion have their opinion ranked at the same level as those with a deep understanding of the issue and this is the result.
I say close your Facebook accounts, stop looking at tabloid newspaper comments. And live your lives using your conscience as a maker.

@cgtmiles .....I don't do facebook or twitter mate....nor do I read the papers. They're just not for me.....I make no judgement of those that do.....it's just not my bag. This is the only social media I do. The world is full of keyboard warriors. This forum on the other hand is full of knowledgeable and helpful, like minded people....that's why I'm here and posing the question.
