Eurotunnel - A Sneaky Little Trick ;)

guys they seem to think they have changed the way the accept bookings now, you cannot book as a high car over 1.85 as a kombi because they tell me that when you get there they will charge you extra because it should have been booked as a transporter all of the vws fall into the same category now
so basically they just ripping people off now cost me £200 for the kombi as posed to £140 as a high car

Yep, same for our MTB Alps trip next year.
No longer, 'car over 1.85'.

So if your T6 is under 1.85 you can still go on as a high car. ????????
Planning on going on the Chunnel to Italy in July.
Time to get the tape measure out when we are next loaded down with all the sailing gear and boat trailer.

Just book it on as a high car. Don’t enter your registration on-line. Call customer services and add it later.

Exactly what I’ve always done.

Or book as our Caravelle which is BO61NOR and then when I get there change to our Kombi which is BO66NOR :)

Got to book the Chunnel and was wondering if anyone knows what is the maximum height?? Reason I ask is because our boat trailer is about the same height as the van, but I want to mount the bike racks on the top of it. Would this cause issues? I seem to recall that coaches go in the same carriages as cars etc, but haven’t been on the Chunnel for about 20 years. I would guess the bikes on top of the trailer wouldn’t be as high as a coach.
Also, do you have to pay extra for a trailer?
I have also heard that you can use Tesco Clubcard vouchers to pay for the crossing and they equate to being 3x their face value. Has anyone heard this, or any experience of it?

You book as van and trailer, you will more than likely be put in the high bit anyway. We always did with our boat. You pay double for a trailer- it’s not cheap! But cheaper than the ferry.
And yes use Clubcard vouchers to soften the blow.

Thanks Oli @BognorMotors. This will seem like a daft question, however, how do you use the clubcard vouchers? Is there a place on the booking screen that you add them in using the voucher code number?

No problem. Just go onto your clubcard app or webpage and change them to travel vouchers. You then book the tunnel manually over the phone. Any more question just ask. We’ve towed our old boats through France for many years.

Brilliant, thanks will take a look and try to sort.

Where are you taking your boat and what boat is it?
Nothing flash, just 2x Topper dinghies on a Mersea trailer as kids will be competing in the World Championships in July at lake Garda.

Nice. I learnt to sale in a topper about 40 years ago!
Lake Garda is like the sea! Waves can be huge at times. Best of luck to them. Beautiful part of the world too.
Remember when you get roadside assistance to include trailer cover or you can extend you VW assist to cover this.

Thanks. Yes my green flag has trailer cover. Just need to see if this extends to Europe.

Booked one the other day and they have changed the booking process now so you can’t get the transporter on as a high car by not filling in reg number. I ended up calling them and they confirmed this was the case so that in their opinion everyone were being charged on the size of their vehicle. Unfortunately transporters get more expensive ! Surprise.
Unfortunately for me I am travelling at the February half term and their first price quoted was about £400 return.
The only way to reduce the cost was to go a day earlier and buy five frequent traveller returns. I already have a return booking in August for the Belgium F1 so he tried to cancel that and use one my new five returns. Guess what there is no availability on the trains I am booked on so can’t cancel and re book. So I am going a day earlier for Feb trip brining it down to £135 return and then will have to have four more trips during the year . Maximum height is 4.2 metres.

Be careful with the frequent traveller booking. They only have a limited amount of slots for each date. Once they are sold out you have to pay full price to get the time you want and you can’t use your vouchers towards them.
They are cheeky buggers, that’s for sure

Going to look to book after 25th January as that is when my next batch of Tesco vouchers is due to arrive. We currently have £54 of clubcard vouchers which is £150 on the Chunnel. Should be getting lots more in Jan so should see a very nice contribution to the cost of it.
Even if the “under 185cm” was still in play, it probably wouldn’t make a lot of difference due to the size of the trailer and with bikes on the top.

Has anyone tried booking their camper as a Motor home on the P&O ferry as opposed to a van? Appears to come out cheaper?

You can still book as a "high car", this is done by clicking "make and model / all countries"

Then "type and size", which lands you here..

I’ve just booked as a high car using my registration number. I did not select the ‘campervan’ option as mine is a Van Side Windows on the V5 and ‘campervan’ also adds about £40 return. I paid exactly the same as last year which is £195 return going out August and back Sept and travelling during sensible hours.

has anyone very recently been on the euro tunnel with their bus?

you use to be able to swerve putting in the reg number and press I don't know, book as a car over 1.95m and then it was cheaper- much cheaper

looks like they just want your reg to book then call the kombi a van. which there gonna charge more for

but if you book as a caravelle on the ferry its dirt cheap, but its a combo not a velle. doubt id get away with that one

they are sneaky but... what's the way round it???

I’ve just come back on the tunnel and it was no more expensive than a car with bikes on that I normally book for my other car
