This is exactly our plan. Our kids are 15/17 and I’m a few years behind you (but not many!). Van is currently transport for up to 6 people but will be converted in a couple of years to enable SWMBO and I to sleep in. Mainly for weekends away while SWMBO still working but then a bit of touring.

There is a decision to be made before we pull the trigger on conversion.

Stick with SWB diesel 102 5sp or twist to LWB petrol. When I look at prices of a TSIs it could be £10k to swap just to get a base van

I’ve owned our 2018 Startline Window Van from 600 miles old. It has air con and parking sensors.

No plans to sell mine, im struggling to think of a better vehicle to have?!
I keep eyeing up caravelles (I have SWB kombi) but the figures just dont stack up to swap, and im probably better off saving the cash to put a rail bed in the back of my kombi.
I plan to keep it until it fall to bits, but even then it will probably be cheaper to fix than a new one looking at the new prices!
Im somewhat hoping the T6's and T6.1's as the last true VW transporters will someone follow the Cuban theme and we will be patching them up for a long time to come or until diesel is no longer sold.

We have camped for years started with caravan, then tents and motorbikes, 6 motorhomes 4 brand new, then in 2021 we bought our 21 Salop Vans Kombi conversion with leather interior, it’s a Startline 110 bhp with business pack and electric pack, I’ve had a Storm pop top fitted, and a Van King bed with sliding tray and we just love it our van is the most versatile vehicle I’ve ever owned, it’s used as a family taxi and most of all our camper with a 300 air Berghaus awning.

John.

I owned my previous T5.1 Caravelle for 11 years without a single issue and when I came to sell it I only lost 7k in those 11 years. I have never kept any vehicle for that length of time and hope to have as many happy years motoring with the T6.1 Kombi.

Amen to that.
I've had some (very) nice cars over the years but there has never been a vehicle which supports every single need as well as my T6.1 does.
Camping, day van, daily drive, removal vehicle - bluddy brilliant :)

I think the only way I’ll sell my van is if I ever find myself in the position of being able to afford an off-grid 3-180 4x4 DSG MAN TGE.
Yeah, "upgrading" to a MAN/Crafter seems to be another trend.

A LWB diesel as a halfway house?

I started converting mine because of the spiralling costs of AirBnBs and because I lost £200 quid on a pre-booked AirBnB when Storm Eunice meant we couldn't go to North Norfolk for a planned couple of days bird-bothering.

In that context, it made complete sense to spend thousands of £££ on glass, insulation, sound deadening, carpet lining, a leisure battery, split charger, solar panels, mains wiring, a captain's passenger seat, a swivel base for same, curtains, lighting, charge points, fridge, cooker/sink, gas bottle, gas cabinet, awning rail, side awning, tailgate awning, toilet, THQ head and tail lights, lowered Bilstein suspension and enough 12mm ply and timber to keep Wickes in business for a decade.

Every night out in it probably costs more than a night in the Dorchester!:slow rofl:

Aye, but you'll never own or be able sell-on the Dorchester. :)

We don't get the same use out of ours in a strict road trip or camping sense, simply because the kids have grown too big to all fit in. It's such a useful and versatile vehicle though, we're definitely keeping it. Our other vehicle is an electric car which is an amazing combination with the T6 for us, electric for local trips as its mega convenient and the price per mile is a fraction of the T6 and the T6 for longer trips, load carrying, bikes, etc.
