Exhaust fault light

I’m sure it was a diesel issue, the ebespatcher heater is also now working ok. I have stayed away a few times over the last couple of weeks with work in it and all now seems to be working ok.
I forgot I ran really low on diesel before it started playing up and suspect there was crap in the tank, took a while to get my brain to join the dots!!

The suction line in the tank has to located at the bottom of the tank. Regardless of how much fuel there is in the tank if there is contamination that is more dense than Diesel (such as water, grit, etc) it will be drawn into the system.

Hi All
Just driven home and had a warning light come up on the dash which is a picture of the engine and in the book it saya exhaust fault?
Anyone know what this could be? (I know what an exhaust is so no need to state the obvious)
Can I still drive the van?
T6 2017

Dean

Dean did you ever work out exactly what was causing it? My folks have the same issue and 2 mechanics so far have been unable to do anything about it.

I think mine was bad fuel, filled up with super diesel a few times and it cleared it. Just had a full service and there were no registered emissions faults logged on the computer.

So, picked up my 2018 T6 today. Comes with full vw service history.
Anyway, AdBlue refill in 1400 miles showed on dash. Diesel pretty much just fumes so drove to a local fuel station and put 20 litres in.
Drove 50 miles.
Just got in it now and this light has come on. Drove 20 miles then Adblue warning changed to 650 miles. Drove 5 more miles. Arrived home. Engine fan continued to run for 2 minutes. Bit of a burning rubber smell.
Of course I have convinced myself I have bought a lemon!
Will take it to a garage in an adjacent unit when I get to work tomorrow, see if I can talk him in to doing a scan for me..
I am reassured by previous comments mentioning the 650 warning and countryside petrol stations

Oh, and another thing. The battery was flat when I picked the van up. Had to get a jump start.
Again, a previous comment mentioned low battery voltage triggering lots of error codes

Low fuel would have prevented a regen, after a fill up the engine can start a regen. the fan and burning smell is normal if the regen was not finished when you arrived home. Hopefully a 50mile drive will have recharged the battery. I’d start it up again this morning and hopefully it will have sorted itself out. Also probably worth topping up the adblue with the correct amount as indicated on the MFD. Don’t overfill it and see if the range increases to 5-6k miles.

So an update. I filled up the AdBlue with a full 10 ltre can (about the mid point between the gallons requested. I tried the 30 seconds eignition thing, MFD still said adblue in 650 miles. SO I decided to drive in ayway and within a few miles had reverted to 5000 miles til fill up. THat evenign drove M6 Stoke-Carlisle and it that time it couldnt decide between 650 miles and 5000 miles about 4 times!
So definitely some dodgy sensor thign going on.
I have a friend who is a mechanic and he is going to plug in his data reader and see if we can clear some codes. His brother is actually a VW Commercial Technician so we will ask him to interpret any codes.

I have seen reference in previouss posts to an update that has previoulsy bee required, so will ask his brother if he can check that is all up to date too

I am really fed up with this van and haven't even started to convert it yet. Currently:
* EGR issue. Engine light comes on. reader tells me P0400- exhaust gas recirculation
* Adblue issue - 650 mile warning so filled with 10 litres adblue. Range went up to 6000. Gradually reduced matching mileage driven, but then at 4000 miles suddenly pinged 650 miles again
* Battery/Alternator issue - Battery not holding charge. just get clicking at attempted start up. Charge takes about 20 mins before Victron charger says battery is ready.

The van is 2018 startline. 155k. Yes high miles but has full VW dealer servcie history with service/MOT completed April this year with very few miles driven afterwards.

Anyine want to buya a VW Transporter? I'm off to buy a transit

Hello
Still trying to cove all bases before going down the route of getting the EGR replaced. I am getting the code P0400. I noticed today that the cable that goes to the sensor that is on the top of the EGR valve adjacent to the manifold where the 'long front pipe' leaves the EGR is broken. I am imagingin it is jus tthe protective outer, or is it likley that wires could be damaged too?
I have attached a couple of photos20231004_102420.jpg20231004_102502.jpg

Is it possible to identify the name of that sensor and advise if its function can be tested wiht OBDeleven? Cold a dodgy connection - and therefor e temperamental signal from that sensor cause the P0400 code?

It’s just a heat proof sleeve, but bending the wires like that won’t be good for longevity. Push the sleeving down onto the sensor body.
I’ve seen similar in various places on my van, WM OEM wiring is pretty shit IMO when I compare it with my 22 year old Audi.
It wreaks of CHEAP.

Thanks DXX. Will try and reattach them. How can I tell if the wires are already damaged? Could my P0400 code be caused by dodgy signal from wiring or sensor?

Unlikely the wires are damaged, more likely the EGR cooler is blocked with soot. What’s the mileage since new or the last EGR renewal?
EDIT; if it‘s the original EGR with 155K miles you’ve got your moneys worth, I’d say replace it.

Mileage is 155k. I don't know if the EGR has been replaced. I know that the rear egr pipe is the upgraded one. Also the optional AdBlue software update has been done, so I think there has been previous on this.
I have only recently bought the van.
It has full VW service history with Swanway in Liverpool and Wrexham.
I have been in touch with them to get the print outs of all work done but they say yes can't as has previous customer details on.
I have asked them specifically what action has been taken around the EGR but no response yet.
I don't fancy forking out for a new EGR. Would probably get it mapped out.
I understand that you can check the position if the flap. Ideally it needs to be entirely closed.
Is the position data provided on VCDS or OBD11 the ACTUAL position of the flap or is it the DEMANDED position, but might actually be jammed open in a different position?

I’ve never looked at the data on the EGR but @mmi has recently posted some interesting test results.
Unless the EGR is relatively new I’d say that there is a good chance that the valve isn’t sealing and as a result there has been a constant stream of exhaust gases the whole time the engine has run which has contributed to the clogging of the cooler.
Your best bet is to get the service history, I don’t see why VW can’t give you the history with the previous owners details omitted.

I agree, but it seems to be beyond them. To be fair, I did finally get someone to send the most recent one wher ethye manually admitted the customer address. I will try again

So is the flap before the EGR valve rather than after it?

Would be helpful know which engine? EDIT: found in Adblue range on MFD

P0400 = EGR system malfunction

Both can be read by VCDS and OBDeleven.

Engine has a built-in test to verify EGR valve movement - the test can be run by VCDS and OBDeleven.
I would start by running the test described in the thread below:

The test for EGR cooler flow is described in the thread below:
