Fitting Tow Bar Kit

Definitely earth it to the body. There is a VW earth stud behind the battery just under the scuttle panel.

Yep, any ancillary should be earthed to the chassis if you want battery monitoring to work correctly. What brand electrics did you use?

Used the PF Jones electrics kit with Oris detachable towbar. All works well, just instructions are multi-language pictograms and take some deciphering. I can see the earth point under the scuttle cover but just looking up how to get to it!

Remove the wipers then the whole plastic cover is just clipped in place just underneath the windscreen glass. You may be able to prize it up behind the battery to reveal a T25 torx screw that holds the plenum chamber cover in place behind the battery. If you can remove this you might squeeze your hand in without having to remove the scuttle.

Thanks. Feeling quite cautious in that area having accidentally let go of a wiper arm a few months ago when fitting new wipers. A tiny tap of metal on glass made a right mess of the screen!

Urgent help needed!!

I’m installing the westfalia 13 pin wiring kit and the instructions state the wiring loom goes through the floor under the passenger seat and then in a channel over the top of the fuel tank. I cannot even get a 5mm draw cable through let alone a wad of cables.

For those that DIY’d how did you run the cables to the plug at the rear? @Stigofthedub

Just fitted mine on a T6 and took ages to identify the wire colour combinations in poor lighting with bad eyesight.....eventually did it by process of elimination... and it works! :)
I’m no expert but I think I may have spotted an error in the PF Jones Fitting Instructions for anyone with a Smart Alternator. It shows the towing loom earth connection direct to the battery terminal, bypassing the sensor on the battery earth lead. Shouldn’t the wiring be earthed on the chassis somewhere before the sensor so the computer can see the current drawn, or is it so small it doesn’t matter? I’ve asked the supplier, but not heard back yet.
Sorry for the late reply

, The cable run over the tank is awkward and takes a few attempts, anything that curls like draw wire won't get through, I had a length of electrical capping ( thin, straight and holds its shape to a degree. A bit of fishing and it goes through.

Well phase 1 complete socket and wiring routed to under the passenger seat. Doing on the drive was a challenge - must have gone under the van about 30 times.

Cable route - through the recommended grommet between the seats. Thread along side of tank then down outer sill under the plastics then along fore / aft chassis beam, under rear plastics above spare wheel popping out at the tow bar. All nearside underbody plastics off. Instructions said over the tank!

It was a pig to get the bunch of sleeved cables through the grommet - I put a mini ziploc bag over the cables and taped it on for protection then treated the sleeving to a rub of Autoglym vinyl and rubber on a bit of cloth and the cable, 3-4 meters, slid through easily.

Dont get too hung up on the route and having enough cable if you have a SWB - I think the Westfalia kit suits LWB too - well there seems about 0.5m too much cable!

If there is a next time, I’ll just pay someone to do it!

BCM tapping next!

Phase two complete and tested - all working. The westfalia kit taps into both BCM plugs and pin 1 of the OBD plug.

Its been a bit of an epic as needed to fit the secondary fuse box under the passenger seat. I’ve installed a fused 16mm sq cable from the battery to under the drivers seat and two ignition switched feeds from spare slots in the lower fuse box for USB chargers (previously on piggy back fuses).

Also moved the feed for the rear 12v socket I installed from a piggy back fuse below the gear lever into the new secondary fuse box.

FYI - all the lighting works without coding. I’m just using with a bike carrier / trailer board so just the parking sensors to switch off via the radio display as they go into full panic mode when reverse engaged.
