Fordswagen Transitster - Anyone else having their head turned?

After a multitude of issues with our van (EGR, DPF, Suspension - ongoing) I must admit to seeing the shine come off a bit.

With the new Transit out this year and the rebadged VW version next year, anyone else getting curious?

Not a fair comparison here with the VW one in a lower (or at least more conservative) spec level but both look good to me.

Particularly intrigued by the new 2.5L petrol plug in hybrid version. 232PS and ~25 miles on full electric. Would hopefully solve many of the EGR/DPF related issues my T6 has been having.

Just a pipe dream for now but wonder what the general thoughts are on these.

The front of the VW looks a bit T5 to me. Is that a mock up of what it could look like or is it from VW?
 
Aside from all manner of vans driven for work purposes my first owned was a Transit.
I bought it from my son whom used it as a day van for a trip to Scotland with his mates and their vans. The previous owner had not been overly honest so lots of components were in need of TLC or replacement. Thankfully I had a go myself at fixing and replacing items and was really surprised at how easy it was but also at how poor these components lasted. Like they were designed to only last as long as they did.
My son bought a 2018 Golf and that was our first VAG vehicle. I noticed a difference in build quality and R&D immediately.

My point being - if the Ford mentality has not changed and worse is now transitioning to the VW van - I feel that would be disastrous.

Example - Transit was blowing smoke. Took it to a main Ford dealer - obvious things checked - analysis suggested new £10k engine needed.

Took same vehicle to a DPF specialist and straight away they identified it had been mapped to bypass the aftermarket cheap DPF.

FORD did not notice this???

Personally I don’t really care how ‘lovely’ they look as underneath and the aftercare etc is just not to the same standard as VW are renowned for.

I think it's broadly accurate based on all the camo images but possibly not a VW official release.

It's a quite a shift for VW to outsource the Transporter Van to Ford but I guess they plan to focus on the ID Buzz and Multivan instead (new California might be based on the Multivan platform instead of the van: The All-New California Concept | Volkswagen Vans).

Bit of a change but might be interesting. More up to date drive trains, opportunity to avoid owning a modern diesel and suspension not based on an early 2000's vehicle. Not sure how much invlvement VW have actually had but there apear to be a couple of Transporter design features there and the height is below 2m (a previous Transit annoyance if you want it as a daily driver).

Anyway, if my T6 stops being such a money pit then I'm sure the allure will fade :rolleyes:

Well, this is it, with the Transporter effectively now being a Ford Transit, I guess the best you'll get is VW aftercare on a Ford vehicle. On the other hand, there are a lot of long legged Transits rolling around so I'm hoping the build quality has improved.

I can totally relate to you comments BTW. My first car was a mide 90's Ford Escort. It was a total heap. Swapped it for a VW polo and couldn't believe the difference. Not driven outside the VW/Audo group since but looks like my hand will now be forced.

Plus, the issues with modern VW diesels has somewhat tarnished my impression of the brand.

Buzz seems to split the room but I agree that it is a nice looking van. Having sat in one though, I thought it was just tiny inside. Maybe the LWB version will be more spacious/practical.

I gather the new Transitster is about 15cm longer than the T6. So, getting on for being half way to an existing LWB (current LWB is 40cm longer than the SWB). Feels like a good practical size.

Anyway, all just dreaming until some decent used onse come on to the market and I could afford one either way.

I quite like the look of the ones I've seen on the road. For all of those that don't like them, there's plenty that will.

I’m not a Ford fan at all, but I do remember that the country ran on Transits (they even had an advert along those lines!) Then Ford lost their way. With the recent Transit Custom, my view is that Ford found their mojo again.

If I ever do replace my Cali and the new one is a Transit in all but name, I would probably go for the Ford variant. Better to deal with the organ-grinder than the monkey!!!
 
Is the new T7 the only VW model that is being fitted by Ford?
I mean are the camper van models still being produced by VW?
