Fraudulent mileage on 2018 T6

I have found in the past, that rental companies keep records of all their ex-vehicles for a certain time, so you may be able to verify the history with them? They would be unlikely to falsify the recorded mileage before disposing of it by auction - in fact, the auction house might also have records if you can identify it.

I was told by a mechanic that a main dealer can scan the ecu for millage check I know bmw have millage stored in key fob

I had a mini and the dealer asked me for the key, I handed it to him and he told me the mileage..it was parked 1/2 a mile away in Aldi car park. He said he can stop the engine too if it gets stolen....Mini...BMW....fake news???

It's an interesting possibility, like a type of telematics, or "over the air update".
Of course, it could never be (legally) done simply because while the car thief is doing 70mph down lane 3 of the motorway and the dealer, at the request of the Police, cuts the engine out, the subsequent collision(s) would be blamed on the Police and the dealer. Nobody would dare to endanger the public or the thief in such a way and you couldn't separate the risks, sadly.
I suppose if they could incrementally reduce the engine power over several minutes, like limp mode, until it can't be moved, that might be viable.

They used to scan my BMW 118 fob to see if it needed a service & the mileage. That was a good few years ago.

Previous devices I have had on vehicles that could instigate remote immobilisation (CTrack on company fleet) only cut the engine once the vehicle was stationary and at idle. At that point the engine could not be re started unless the remote immobilisation commmand was cancelled from either app, web portal or CTrack control room.

Thats actually what the MIni dealer said to me....they could put the car in limp mode or immobilise it when stationary....so, id say the technology does exist to investigate mileage beyond what is says on the dash.

Presumably scanning the fob is just to pick up a unique ID, to identify the vehicle to which it is linked to the manufacturer system. The manufacturer database then does the rest. I doubt the key itself is storing data.

Yup, the Cat5 trackers can immobilise a vehicle in the same conditions.

Yep, that’s exactly what my MetaTrak does. If stolen, Metatrak (or me via my app) simply disable it so it can’t be started again once it’s stationary or engine turned off. It’s not particularly complex or expensive tech and has been around a few years.

Even a £20 eBay tracker has a relay output that can be used to control a fuel pump/ignition circuit etc. Just stick a cheapo SIM card in it & Voila! My Webasto remote has a second relay output that can be used for similar.

You get quite a bit of info off the We Connect app. Can see where I’ve parked up and lock and unlock remotely.

Due to this thread, I have found companies that sell products that reduce the mileage by a half or a third or whatever whilst it is being driven around. I wonder if they work and if so how many are in use.

Apparently the remote engine cut off works by…..once the engine has been turned off the immobiliser will kick in so it won’t restart even with the key
