Fridge power requirements

3way fridges are very poor on 12v dc power.

my 3way box draws about 80w and 6A-9A continuously ( 5hr on 100ah battery till flat )

**************************************

compressor fridges are most economical and draw 2-6A cycling as the compressor runs on / off.

( 10-20hr on 100ah battery till flat )

***************************************

solar with good kit will give you 6A per 100w in good sun.

so a 200w solar, generating around 12A, charging a 100ah AGM battery, should run indefinitely (provided its sunny during the day)

********************

so i take the 3way frisge to EHU places or camping on gas.

and take the compressor fridge if its off grid 12v use.

you can get some good deals on compressor fridges these days . . .

have a look at these two. (Dometic cloans)

Looks like they have been replaced with a slightly newer model, if its not that this is at least a very similar one

yeah i can see, if im to purchase one for below £400 i want to make sure someone else has tried and tested! haha

Yep the cheaper brands all look the same and prob same ish components. I wanted the 50 ish litre size so less choice out their. Loads of similar 35-40 ish litre sizes available.

Very wise, if you can stretch to £430 I’ll do a write up of mine next week. Using it in anger in Snowdonia this coming weekend

I've updated this thread as loads of places are out of stock . . .

after this weekend at T6F summer camp, I've decided to get a second compressor fridge . . .

looks like the 4x4Raptor ones i posted abovce have been very popular and sold out !!

and you Believe these are the same manufacturers as yours ? they don’t even seem to have brand names

There seems to be 3 or 4 slightly different styles . . . . all with slightly different branding.

i think there are a few Chinese factories knocking them out and re-brand as required for the retailer . . .

They are all clones of the Dometic Market leaders . . . . . of which is also produced in china somewhere . .

have a look at the ones on the market and you will start to see the similarities . . .

(if you want Dometic or Weaco or ARB etc Branded ones they are £700+ )

I've gone for a slightly different one this time . . (looks oks to me, its cheap, just a shame it has no bag/cover)

it has 12v & a 240vac power supply . . .

Tips:
Consult the customer service about the material of cartons before purchasing a fridge. As we all know, iron is high heat conductivity metal, which will leading to poor cooling and heat preservation effect.Especially in summer, the temperature of the car trunk is up to 70℃, iron car fridge isn't a good choice. Besides, the iron painting process easy to lose paint, get corrosion and rust often, not pit impact, not durable.
Note:
1. Make sure that the power voltage connected to the car refrigerator is correct at any time (parameter labels have car refrigerator verification voltage parameters. 2. Do not pour the liquid directly into the car refrigerator. It is forbidden to transform refrigerators privately to avoid danger. 3. Refrigerator should not be exposed to the rain or the sun directly. 4. After the power on, the temperature of the side and the middle will be about 3 degrees. 5. @Dellmassive Where you mention the running time for a compressor fridge on 12v battery, you mention a running time of 10-20 hours? Is this the length of the total run times(the total of actual compressor running)or the time it is actually in use (plugged in, compressor running or not) It's probably a stupid question ....... I'm only curious because I might purchase one along with a leisure battery for a simple set up before I get split charging or solar sorted out. In simple terms my question is, will a fully charged battery last a weekend with the fridge connected without recharging? obviously this assumes the door isn't open more than necesarry. just clip me around the ear if it's a totally stupid question, I can take it......;)

10-20hrs plugged in an running.

the compressor cycles on/off as required.

there are many factors that determine how long the fridge will last on a leisure battery . . .

***********

what temp you set it at,
how full it is,
how often you open it,
how much stuff you take out,
the ambient air temp,
the van or tent tent,
the size of the battery,
the health of the battery,
etc,etc,etc. . . .

************

SO . . . . if you had a 100Ah AGM leisure battery. and a 60W compressor fridge like above.

w=v*a - w/v=a (60w/12v=5a) or 5a/h. power usage running 100%

100ah AGM battery with 50%DOD = 50Ah

5ah / 50ah = 10hrs runtime (100% compressor running)

10hrs / 2 = 20hrs runtime (50% compressor running)

*****************

Basically you should get at least 10-20hrs runtime before thae battery is flat.

you may get up to 4days . . . . all depends on the factors above.

the only real way to know is to get it and test. . . . . . . .

*****************

you have a few options to charge the battery . . . . .

100W-200W mobile solar setup. (what i normally do)
set of jump leads and run the van to use alternator to charge,
Borrow some EHU and take a decent battery charger,
Get a DC-DC charger fitted on the van,
Take 2x leisure batteries (what i normally do)

*****************

FWIW -

we run a compressor fridge and TE cooler box plus all the tent and camp lights etc etc for a 4day weekend off one battery using solar to top up during day.

in summer with 200W solar kit and 100ah AGM battery you should be able to run one of these fridges indefinitely.
