Happy Days - at Nemesis suggestion on my other thread, I unplugged the Hands on Detection plug from the back of the left button pad and now I have no OBD errors at all.
I hope I can just ignore the TA button that does nothing. We don't haver the A5 module so I can't enable TA.
Wow. T6Forum FTW!
I have just swapped my steering wheel with my spare wheel that now has all the correct buttons AND DSG paddles.
Thanks to a remarkable alignment of the planets, @PaulR83 and I were able to swap button pads via the UK-Aus postal services and our van steering wheel now looks original except for the DSG paddles on the back.
As far as I can see, this forum doesn't have a for sale section, but get in touch if you want a new MFSW with DSG paddles. I have a spare! It has hands on detection and the TA assist button, and the black 6 pin connector plug from the airbag. it does NOT have heating...

So I started as well equipping my MJ23 T6.1 with a HOD steering wheel.

The steering wheel I recently purchased at a good price is 3G0419089 DA (Passat B8 Facelift 2019, requires a 5-pin wiring harness for the airbag).

Now, there are these wiring harnesses—I had suspected 5G0971584J or 5G0971584L would fit. While these have a 5-pin connector that fits the steering wheel, the cable is routed to the yellow connector of the steering column instead of the 5-pin connector for the keypad of the steering wheel to send the horn signal to the LIN bus.

So that doesn’t work.

Now I’ve ordered another T6.1 wiring harness: 5G0971584R.

This one routes the horn signal to the 5-pin connector, so it looks like it should fit. However, I chose it just based on the pictures.

The unknown factor now is: Does the steering wheel control module or button panel of 3G0419089 DA even have the correct hardware and software version to send the horn signal to the LIN bus?

Thanks,
Bucky

Hi

I successfully installed a Golf Mk8 R steering wheel with touch buttons and paddle shifts this weekend with making the wiring suggestions from the amazing @Pauly (thank you as always for the info).

Everything works on the wheel (even managed to disable the heating wheel illumination with VCDS), however despite my best efforts I havent been able to get the cruise control working again. Originally I had the ESP error on the dash but after enabling the KLR and Capacity Wheel options that went away but now it says ACC not available when I active it via the wheel.

VCDS log attached, that I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction to get ACC working again. Worth also mentioning that I have an Alpine iLX-F11 installed with the Alpine CAN module so I guess thats what the radio error messages are.

As always this community is amazing, so thanks in advance for your collective help as I miss my ACC !

Thx

Not sure it will help you, but:

klr is set correctly :

=> but you have a problem of communication with it:

please verify that:
-it's not an old error
-you don't have a problem of communication in LIN wire
-you set correctly MQB platform in steering wheel
-you don't use dual CAN

Thanks for the reply @Rems

1.Its not an old error because I clear it and it comes straight back
2. The LIN wire being the cruise control wire that I moved to the correct location in the yellow airbag connector once I relocated the horn cable you mean?
3. MQB platform in steering wheel, can you explain what you mean by this please as im not sure
4. Again, not sure what you mean here - any more info?

side thought - im not worried about HOD so if there is a way of disabling that I wondered if that would help?

Appreciate you taking the time to reply - W

Update - seems that coding it a few times with VCDS sorted it out, im not sure if the sub module didnt take the coding correctly or not, but I put it back to the original coding then re-coded it and everything worked ok.

Still got a few errors on VCDS, but sorting those for a later date I guess!

Would love a list of the options of the MFL submodule if anyone has one, im pretty sure if I knew what all the bytes did it would solve all my errors

Sorry realised my last scan upload wasnt the full version with the errors on it - thx all, all ideas welcome on how to fix those!

So – I’ll now attempt to write the (provisional) final report for posterity:

Starting Point:

T6.1 California Ocean MJ23 already equipped with ACC, Lane Assist, multifunction steering wheel, etc.

ACC unlocked to predictive ACC (pACC) via coding (possible without SWAP from MJ23 onwards).

Lane Assist coded to adaptive Lane Assist.

This setup was already quite nice, but with the drawback that during relaxed (highway) driving, the system would repeatedly chime, asking me to take over the steering wheel.

It’s well known that the 3G0419089EM steering wheel works plug & play in newer model-year T6.1s, since its button module also has a 6-pin connector and the airbag, including the factory wiring harness, can continue to be used. However, it was not available at a reasonable price at the moment.

I then went for the 3G0419089DA M/T/-/HOD TA, which, as expected, has a button module with a 5-pin connector. This meant I needed a new airbag wiring harness.

My first attempt was the 5G0 971 584 J wiring harness, which does have a 5-pin connector, but instead of routing the horn signal to the steering wheel control unit, it passes it through to the steering column/clock spring. This doesn’t work in the T6.1.

The second attempt with the 5G0 971 584 R wiring harness was a perfect match. It has a 5-pin connector for the button module, the correct number of ground flat connectors, and is plug & play with the existing wiring harness (5G0 971 584 AA).

Steering Wheel Swap

The steering wheel swap was completed in 20 minutes following the instructions here. Then, onto the control modules:

19 Gateway

Parameter: Sollverbau_KLR

Old Value: not installed

New Value: installed

A5 Driver Assistance

Parameter: Klr

Old Value: Not_coded

New Value: Coded

Parameter: Hc_variante

Old Value: Variante_0

New Value: Variante_2

19 Gateway -> Adaptation -> Control Unit for Multifunction Steering Wheel

Coding unchanged as stored in the new steering wheel (see picture).

First Test Drive Results:

No remaining control unit errors after resetting the battery disconnect – everything was clearable.

Horn works.

Speed adjustment: +/- 1 km/h on Res/Set and +/- 10 km/h on +/- buttons remains unchanged.

TA button toggles between ACC (in my case, pACC) and Travel Assist (in my case, adaptive Lane Assist).

For the first time, I saw that adaptive Lane Assist kept the lane even under 60 km/h on a country road. Hysteresis? It was specifically active at
53 km/h.

Attached are a few images for reference.

Best regards,
Bucky

in the error of klr on gateway, it is writen "Wheel_LIN_2", there is an option to use only 1 LIN, I will search the name if you don't found it.

start to uncheck In control unit „13 Adaptive Cruise Control“ long coding "capacitive steering wheel"
keep it only on gateway.

I can confirm that I took the hint somewhere in the known conversion threads (German Caliboard) and did not even try change/enable in controller 13 to "capacitive steering wheel" in the coding. Everything seems to work fine so far

I was hoping to pick your brains lads.

I posted not to long ago regarding adding dsg paddles to my t6.1 steering wheel.

I have been looking and reading and I think I have got most things sorted out on paper, but the last glitch is the multi function button set to look for.

I will provide the necessary pics I currently have at the moment.

I know that I need a new wheel body complete with dsg paddles already fitted.
Quite a few out there so these are readily available. Its just the part number 3G0959442.
It's the last letter that I am not sure on.

Swcm 6RA959653A

Want to keep all the buttons I have but with the addition of the paddles.

Cheers Dan

According to your existing wheel an the following Code:

M/T/H/HOD and TA or AM Multifunktion/Tiptronic/Heating/HandsOnDetection and Travel Assist or Assistent Menu

you probably look for:

M/T/-/- AM

In Caliboard.de you find the following Steering Wheels:

Part Number Code TA/AM
3G0419089CQ M/T/-/HOD TA
3G0419089BD M/T/-/HOD TA
3G0419089BP M/T/-/HOD TA
3G0419089BK M/-/H/- AM
3G0419089CK M/T/-/HOD TA
3G0419089AH M/-/-/HOD TA
3G0419089DA M/T/-/HOD TA
3G0419089BS M/T/H/HOD TA
3G0419089CM M/T/H/HOD TA
3G0419089CR M/T/H/HOD TA
2GM419089T M/T/-/- AM
2GM419089S M/T/-/- AM
2GM419089AE M/-/-/- AM
2GM419089AF M/-/-/- AM
3G0419089DM M/T/H/HOD TA
3G0419089DE M/-/-/- AM

So go check If you find pics/offers in the Internet for 2GM419089T and 2GM419089S

Sorry, potential misunderstandig. You are looking for the button set of the two steering wheel sets I proposed you? But as you said you can't attach paddels to your existing steering wheel. So one of the two steering wheels S or T will get you steering wheel body and the right button set, right?

thanks for this @Rems , I dont have "capacitive steering wheel" checked in module 13, I tried that and realised that wasn't needed.

if you can let me know where the 'use LIN1' option is that would be great - many thx

hi Bucky, thank you for a very detailed reply. much appricated. I have started to piece together the codes now on the data sticker.
I will look up the last 2 part numbers and see were this gets me regarding what models they come from and availabilty.

Having a look now confirms that steering wheels ending with 'T' seem to be the ones that have the required settings for my needs.

Hhi @Bucky2k regarding the image above from ODBEleven, im trying to work out a label file for the MFL module and I think this might be exactly what im looking for (as there is no labels in VCDS for this module). Do you have anymore screenshots please that show the long coding bytes with the labels? thx
How can I access the long coding? As it's a sub-controller accessed via Gateway / 19 I an not sure there is a long coding view in OBD eleven. I will give it a go later
