H4 Headlamp Bulb Upgrade

Are there any issues with changing the original bulbs with brighter LED bulbs?
LED are normally a bad idea as the light output is not necessarily in the corrent place to project the correct pattern and is not road legal.

brighter filament lamps okay, higher wattage might over-heat the lenses and wiring and not be road legal.

Just got my new 2018 t32 couple days ago and i love the van but the headlights are really crap, they let the whole van down.
Its the only thing im really dissapointed with

Great article. Upgraded this evening. Look much better. Although haven't taken it out yet. Waiting for it to get dark.

Upgrading the bulbs to Night breakers does help but only a bit. The T6 has a factory fault regarding the voltage to the terminal at the H4 bulb. It should be around 13 Volts and usually tests below 11 Volts with the aircon running.

VW should fix the fault on all vehicles.

I currently have the South African automotive regulation suthority working with me to try and solve this but I need as many as possible to take their vehicle to VW and log a claim with regarding the poor light intensity of the vehicles.

H4 headlights are tested with a required input volts of 13.2 Volts and the UNECE Regulation number 20 states that the voltage at the terminal should be adjusted or regulated to achieve a specific light intensity.

The more people that log a fault regarding the light intensity the more VW will take note of this.

You may have more luck petitioning Osram or Philips to make a batch of specific 11v bulbs... :)

Without trawling through all the threads on what people have replaced their H4 bulbs with, what is the general concensus on the best H4 bulb. I have Phillips 130% something or other which I fitted a couple of years ago but is there something out there newer and better, as one of mine has just blown.

I’m sure this was just discussed yesterday, so a read of recent threads on this would probably be fruitful

Thanks, I read that post but didn't really get any definitive answers from it. Anyway I just ordered some Osram night breakers.

I think the difinitive answer was is doesnt matter what bulbs you put in the H4 light unit it wont make much difference!

Hi all. Today I started the Headlight bulb upgrade, after reading lots of posts regarding how difficult this would be due to lack of space I set aside the morning to do the job.

Bought myself a set of H4 Metal Blue high power bulbs, and a pair of LED 501's, had the wife on stand by just in case I needed a smaller hand.

I started on the passenger side, loosen the battery clamp and moved it as far back and left as it would go, this allowed me to gain easy access to the bulbs and changed these very easy.

Next was the driver side, little more tricky, I removed the top of the air box and took the opportunity to fit a Pipercross panel air filter, again by removing the top air box this allowed me to get into the bulbs with ease, had the complete job done in under 45 mins.

What H4 bulbs did use in your t6?

Hi, any recommendations of good quality light bulbs (legal or not) which I can replace the standard candles with please, anything to improve them a little bit!

What lights do you have? H4’s H7’s?

I upgrade my dipped H7 beam to Phillips 130% and that has made a massive improvement. Would had gone for the 150% but wasn’t sure what the life would be like (the 130% versions I got are around 450 hours).

Not sure you want to go down the illegal route (assume you mean LEDs in a non-LED headlight) as if you are involved in a bump they could pick up on that and not pay or blame you.

Have a search on here as there have been many topics that discuss options.

Thank, I meant a higher wattage than legal, but if you think LED's would be better, and recomendations please?

I’d personally steer clear of putting LEDs in a non LED headlight for legal reasons.

I’d look at 130% or 150% bulbs instead.
