H4 headlight upgrade.. but to what?

Just a tad too far south for me as I'm north of York....however I'm regularly up to near Coldstream from York

Is anybody aware of any problems when using the THQ lights with projectors and LEDs abroad? Are they more likely to dazzle oncoming traffic?

Yes they will, so you'll need beam deflector stickers as with any RHD headlights that don't have 'travel mode'. You'll need to do some trial and error positioning by shining the lights against a wall to see when they cut the 'flick' up from the beam.

You've only just made me think about this. We are going to France next year, so might just go in the Tiguan instead.

Update - I had the second-hand H7 headlights (from Ebay) fitted, along with the Philips Racing Vision GT200 bulbs.

They were an improvement on the H4s (well, anything would be!), and meant I can drive on dipped beams with reasonable confidence, at a reasonable speed in the dark. They aren't perfect; ideally, I would like greater brightness, and longer range, but for that I would need (illegal) aftermarket LEDs, at considerable extra expense.
Speeds on a twisting, relatively narrow (but trunk road - the A65), are now normally around 45-50 at night - up by 10mph.
Main beam was also somewhat improved - but as others have said, to get full benefit, the van needs to be re-coded, so that all four h7 bulbs are illuminated on main beam, not just two, as with the H4s.

Enter @foggy3061 from this Forum, who has a VCDS, knows how to use it, and was happy to travel halfway to meet me in a lay-by. He quickly ran and saved a scan of my van, then made the necessary alteration to the module, so all four bulbs would illuminate. He also fixed my DRLs so that the rear lights (and front sidelights) now come on with the ignition - the 'Scandi' fix. He later sent me the before and after scans by PDF for my records.

The difference on main beam on the way home was staggering. The van felt safe to run at 60mph on said trunk road - the legal limit. I am therefore happy, and feel much safer when travelling in the dark.

Many thanks to Foggy for his kind assistance and expertise.

I will take some 'after' photos (I already have the 'before' ones), and will post them.

Well, I did have the 'Before' photos! They have gone AWOL, unfortunately. You'll just have to imagine a couple of candles!

Anyway, herewith the 'After' photos, which I think show an adequate spread and length of beam from the replacement H7 lights (with all four illuminated on main beam. the first shot.)

Bear in mind, these are the higher powered GT200 bulbs.

Hi All

Watching this post with interest and purchased a pair of H7's to replace my standard H4's, can I just clarify on the recoding bit to have both dip and main beam on at the same time, I have spoken to two companies that replace these and they have not heard of this, thanks in advance... Simon

Simon, yes it can be done by various systems, VCDS, Carista etc I believe.....numerous threads on the Forum about it if you search.

Can be fitted by yourself and doesn't need a company to do that or the coding change. Always a helpful forum member usually willing to assist

Might want to avoid them then

Hi Simon,

It's a real surprise that two companies offering retrofit of the H7 headlights don't know that the van needs to be coded for dipped and full beam to stay on together!

It's a really easy change to make in VCDS, just a tick in a box. I think it can even be done using Carista now, provided that you have the latest beta version. I don't use Carista, it's all VCDS here, but I'm sure someone will confirm it can be done with Carista now.

Cheers.

This a really good example of how well these work when you can have dipped and main beam on together.

Each light chamber is 'tuned' to produce either dipped or main beam. Dipped beam does a good job of lighting the foreground, then you can see the extra distance main beam gives. If dipped didn't stay on with main beam, you'd have a dark patch in the foreground.

The main issue with H4s is that the reflector has to do both jobs, so sacrificing distance on main beam to keep the foreground illuminated, but also having to compromise both dipped and main beams because if you 'tune' for dipped beam, you'll worsen main beam, and vice versa.
