Help/advice With Vw

Have to admit, was thinking of getting Mrs DaveyB a VW Golf when her old Fiesta blew up on Monday. However. whilst I love my T6, after various dealings with VW, and reading a lot of the problems others have had with VeeDub customer services, have just been out and bought her a Volvo V40. Went and saw it, test drove, bought it and drove it away all on the same day (today). They never even quibbled when I said I wanted to take it right now, they went and told the w/s manager to find a space in the w/s and service it, as they had only had it a couple of days and hadn't even put it on the forecourt. Pretty good I thought.
Volvo quality is about 1 million times better than VW's imo. My Volvo XC60 has 105,000 miles, and I find this hard to say but the brake pads have still not been changed yet. It's serviced every year by Volvo even though it only does about 12,000 miles per year (annual service required); and it never goes wrong; T6 really good so far (only 25,000 miles to date); but the T5 fell apart at 40k miles; lets wait and see.

I'm in for my first service tomorrow, watch this space.
If they insist on new discs, I'll fit them myself.

Ok, I know I'm going to get shot to pieces for saying this but.....

The brake disc is just a piece of bare metal, as soon as it gets damp it will corrode. Leave the van parked a few days in the rain and there will be a build up of rust. On a van the brakes are designed to stop it fully laden with a tonne or so but most of the time our vans don't carry this weight so the rear brakes don't do any work, the front discs quickly polish as they do all the work, the rears don't and gradually they become pitted. It happens on cars too but to a lesser extent as they don't have to cope with such a variation in loading.

I struggle to keep the rear discs polished on my van as it is not used every day, if they have to be replaced so be it. Badly scored discs will (or should) fail an MOT.

Tin hat on :)
You’re right. My van has the rear brake issue normally, however I’ve been fully laden and towing a tri-axle trailer over the last week and guess what...not a single grinding noise from the back! They are noticeably polished like never before. 4500 miles done.

During the winter months I don't use the handbrake when parking the vehicle but leave it in gear instead unless on a step incline. The brake pads are sintered which means they have metallic particles in them which rusts to the disc. If you've pulled away after the van has been parked up overnight and hear a clunk, that's the pad and disc which have rusted to each other breaking loose, usually accompanied by some knocking for the first few times you brake.

Thanks for that info mooncat, I've noticed mine doing that recently and wondered what caused it.

Also noticed the incredibly rusty looking discs and was surprised as I use it every day..then I found this thread

I must admit I was only thinking the other day, that the discs rust up really quick! Matter mins on mine after I’ve washed it!
